Notes for Z
EBEDEE SWINSON, SR.:
The discovery of Zebedee Swinson as the father of James and Zebedee Swinson is fairly recent. I've suspected for some time that Zebedee and James may be brothers based on the close dates of their births and their proximity to each other in the Onslow County, North Carolina Census. The acquisition of a deed executed in Duplin County on 15 Oct 1866 from "Zebidie" & James Swinson to Maxy A. Manning (Duplin County Deed Book 26, p. 143) provided the evidence necessary to make this connection.
The full text of the deed follows, but two important points are (1) the indication that "James of Onslow County" is a party to the deed, and (2) the line "...we fell heirs to from our father Zebedee Swinson". The first places James in Onslow County, a strong indicator he's "our" James Swinson. The second cements the relationship between James and the two Zebedee's.
One other indication this is the James Swinson we're looking for is the presence of Owen Gurganus as a witness to the deed. Owen has been found in many documents concerning James and Rebecca Marshburn Swinson and their descendants.

Additional information concerning Zebedee's family, listing John Andrew, Sally Ann, Polly and Annie Swinson as children of Zebedee, Sr ,and siblings of James and Zebedee, Jr. Swinson, was provided by Mr. Kellon Maready of Duplin Co., NC. This is "raw data" provided by descendants with no documentary evidence attached. This information was included with Mr. Maready's permission. Future research will be directed to verification of the data instead of using it as a sole "proven" source.
Research of North Carolina Census records revealed the presence of two Zebedee Swinson's in 1830...one living in Duplin, the other in Onslow. Microfilm records of both counties were inspected to determine if the same man was recorded twice, possibly because he lived near the Onslow/Duplin county line. (See source citations for Zebedee, Sr. and Jr.) The "Zedibe" Swinson household recorded in the 1830 North Carolina Census of Duplin County consisted of:

Males: 1 50-60
Females: 1 20-30 and 1 40-50

The 50 to 60 year old male is undoubtedly Zebedee, Sr. The age range indicates he was born between 1770 and 1780. His birth is recorded thus until futher data reveals a more specific birthdate. The younger female is possibly a daughter, and the older female his wife, who's name is still unknown. The age range for the 40 to 50 year old female indicates a birth between 1780 and 1790, and is recorded as such until futher information is available.
The Onslow County household of "Zebade" Swinson consisted of 1 male 20-30 and 1 female 15-20; Zebedee, Jr. and his wife Nancy Brown. These two men were not the same person and are deemed to be father and son.
