John Bawle had 2 sons, Henry Bawle and Robert Bawle, who was prob. the father of John Ball, clerk of Langton Matravers, Dorset, and supporter of Rev. John White. CD 181-dau of of John Bawle, of Lichfield, sister of Henry Bawle, DD, archdeacon of Chichester. Living in 1601 Search, vol 17, p. 154; will dated 29 Mar 1648, proved 14 Jun1649 (PCC 105 Fairfax); he entered Winchester School in 1587 (age 12); graduated B.A. in 1597 and M.A. in 1601. became rector of Holy Trinity Church, Dorchester, Dorset, in 1607 and also became rector of the adjacent St. Peter's church there. He was called the "Patriarch of Dorchester" and was a leading figure in forming the Mass. Bay Co. He also formed the group who sailed on the "Mary & John" in 1630. He was b. in the 16th century Rectory Farm House, which still stands today, across the road from the St. John, the Baptist church in Stanton St. John, Oxfofrdshire; his house in Dorchester, Dorset is also still standing; see also Search, vol 2, pp. 51-52; vol 12, pp. 32-33, 51-52 and vol ll, pp. 38-40. 3 children. |

Stephen came first in 1630 on the "Mary & John", at age 21, and he applied for freemanship on 19 Oct 1630. He returned to England to marry Jane Hardy, 13 Mar 1633/4, at Symondsbury, Dorset and they sailed on the "Recovery of London" a few weeks later. Search for Mary & John, vol 13,p. 32; bp. 1608, Stockton, Wilts, where his father Rev John Terry was rector until 1625. There is a brass in the Stockton church, in honor of Rev. Terry; his mother, Mary White, was the sister of Rev. John White of Dorchester, and dau of John White & Isabel Rawle (dau of John Rawle of Litchfield). The birthplace of Rev. John White (and probably, Mary White, mother of Stephen Terry) is now a residence in Stanton St. John (owned by an Oxford college0 a few miles from Oxford. Mary White had a sister, Martha White, who m. Rev. William Cooke, vicar of Crediton, Devon (1596-1615) he succeeded Rev. Peter Duncan, father of Nathaniel Duncan of the "Mary & John". William had a dau. Elizabeth Cooke (b. abt. 1602) who m. Rev. William Walton, 1627 in Dorchester, who lived in Hingham and Marblehead, MA.
