Broadway, Shelbyville, Indiana 46176) John Baltzer Anspach came to New York with the Palatines in June 1710. By May of 1723 he had settled in the Tulpehocken Valley, Berks County, Pennsylvania, having migrated through the Schoharie of New York. John Blatzer Anspach was one of the German volunteers in the English expedition against the French in Queen Ann's war in 1711. "Blatzer" as he was called was a member of the Christ Lutheran Church, located about one half mile west of Stouchsburg, Pennsylvania, and is buried in the old cemetery there. He owned land about one mile north west of town of Stouchsburg, and it is supposed that this farm was his home place. His wife's name was Anna Maria. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - .
11. Johannes Anspach Part 2, - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - In the book Early Pennsylvania Births 1675-1875 it lists: Charter members, Christ Lutheran Church, Strouchsburg, Berks Co, PA. Anspach, Balthas; Anspach, George; Anspach, John; Anspach, J. Peter; Anspach, Leonard - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Balthasar was one of the founders of Christ Lutheran Church - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Balthasar was an indentured servant in New York Colony, America 1710. This information kindly shared by: Yvonne White - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Balthasar petitioned the court to become a citizen in Mayor's Court, Albany, New York. 3 Jan. 1715/1716 This information kindly shared by: Yvonne White - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The Anspachs were among the hundreds of Germans who were "escorted" en masse to New York colony in 1709/1710 from England. They were all indentured servants, who were supposed to make pine tar & pitch for the English Navy. However, the Governor was tricked, the man in charge actually knew nothing about the processing and the colonists felled hundreds of trees incorrectly before it was discovered to be wrong. The correct process would take two years and much of the Governor's own wealth was lost trying to make the colony profitable. It did not help that there was a language problem as well as problems in surveys of the promised land grants. Balthasar & other colonists were drafted to serve in Queen Anne's War, and returned to find their families had not been provided for in their absence. They were never paid for their service and many eventually left New York Colony for Pennsylvania, including Balthasar and his family. The Pennsylvania Dutch colonists encouraged their German cousins to come to settle. However, they were not prepared for the unannounced masses that descended on the supposedly "empty" land. The Indians who used the land, and had treaties with the Dutch, came back.
12. Johannes Anspach Part 3, On Jan. 10, 1725, Balthas' name appeared on the first tax list compiled for that section (Tulpehocken), and around 1732 he owned a tract of land about a mile north of the present Christ (Tulpehocken) Lutheran Church, west of Stouchsburg. He was an elder at Reid's Church, some 2 miles S.E. of Stouchsburg at Womelsdorf, built in 1727, however as Moravian influence in the church and conflicting feelings grew, he and about 160 others left and formed the church west of Stouchsburg which was built in 1743. This area is in the present day Marion Township and was referred to as Fells Manor. (Copy of Will of Johann Balthasar Anspach on Pg. 17. Aunt Polly's proof part 1, From _Boone County [Arkansas] and Its People_, 1955, by Ralph R. Rea, pp. 90-93: 'No doubt most all of the so called "bad men" of the day spent some time in the Arkansas Ozarks. It is known for certain that Jesse and Frank James, together with Jim and Cole Younger were in this area on several occasions. One of their visits here led to a spirited gun battle in which two men were killed and several wounded. The time of this gun battle is generally fixed as 1870. 'A mail route was established, shortly after the Civil War, from Forsythe, Missouri, to the Crooked Creek Post Office (about this time the name was changed to Harrison). This route pretty well followed the present course of U. S. Highway 65 from the White River to Harrison. The route was carried on horseback, and on more than one occasion it was robbed in some lonely spot along the road. One of the riders on this route was William T. Baker, who as a child had survived the Mountain Meadows Massacre. Another Boone County man who carried this route shortly after this time was Frank Russell. On the day the James and Younger boys decided to pull their holdup, William Baker was carrying the route. 'North of Harrison twelve miles is the present Burlington community, which in 1870 was known as Gaddy's Corner. It was here that the mail carrier met four armed men while on his northbound trip. One of the riders pointed his gun at Baker and demanded the mail pouch. When Baker later told of the experience he said, "I was scared, all right, when the red complected one they called Jesse pointed his pistol at me and demanded the mail pouch." Then Baker went on to explain that the haul was rather small. "They got one hundred and five dollars in money and some registered mail." 'After the robbery Baker went on to the first settlement near Omaha and gave the alarm. As a posse began to gather, one told of having seen some suspicious characters at the home of a fellow named Perry who lived near Gaddy's Corner.

38. Dobyns (Dobbins) family history Part 1, [Begin original page 1] CHAPTER I THE DOBYNS FAMILY IN ENGLAND The origin of the name of Dobyns is not entirely clear. Different theories have been advanced. One early writer (fn 1) has suggested the theory that the Dobyns family is of Norman origin, originally arriving in England with William the Conqueror in 1066. According to this theory the original spelling of the name was D'Aubyn, meaning "from Aubyn". It is possible that the first D'Aubyn came from the town of Aubin on the Isle of Jersey. Or the name might originally have been D'Aubigne or D'Aubigny, as there are still families in France by these names. (fn 2) And, at an early date, there were those of the name d'Aubigny in Gloucestershire. (fn 3) The above cited early writer states that the D'Aubyn from the Conqueror's army was settled in Gloucestershire at Sledisland in the parish of Aure or Awre. Another writer (fn 4) supposes that, from Aure, part of the family removed to Waterford in southern Ireland, spreading from there over Ireland. It is noteworthy that the Irish families did not develop the use of the final "s" on the name and usually spelled it "Dobbin" with occasional variation. However, Gloucestershire is included in the area (in and on the borders of Wales) in which there was a tendency to add a final "s" to any name on which it could be used, for example, Jones, Williams, Jenkins, etc. This could account for the use of the final "s" by the English families. It is also possible that the name "Dobin", like "Robin", was a diminutive of Robert, and that, like the surname Roberts, it was derived from the given name Robert, possibly that of the father. This would not seem to account for the localization of the name to certain areas of England, notably Gloucestershire and its environs. A third possibility, although probably coincidental, is worthy of passing note. The tribe which inhabited the territory now known as Gloucestershire were known in the British and Roman era (about 300 A.
39. Dobyns (Dobbins) family history Part 2, The branch of the family traced herein moved from Aure to the parish of Newent, Gloucestershire, where it had its early seat at Atherload's Place. GUYA DOBYNS is the earliest ancestor discovered and is the first English generation to be considered. [Begin original page 2] 1 GUYA DOBYNS was said by Bigland to have lived at Newent at the time of Edward IV (1461-1470). The family tree, as prepared by Bigland, is reproduced on page 3 opposite and lists this GUY DOBYNS as the first generation. This may be the same GUY DOBYNS of Newent, yeoman, who in 1431, was stated by one ROBERT CAPPES before the King's Bench to be a debtor to CAPPES in the sum of forty shillings (fn 7) CHILDREN of GUYA DOBYNS, according to Bigland, were JOHNB DOBYNS (See 4) GUYB DOBYNS (See 2) -------------------------------- 2 GUYB DOBYNS (GUYA) (from 1) may have married AGNES UPCOT about 1464. (fn 8) The only known SON of GUYB DOBYNS, according to Bigland, was RICHARDC DOBYNS (See 3) -------------------------------- 3 RICHARDC DOBYNS (GUYB, GUYA) (from 2) was said by Bigland to have been the father of one DAUGHTER ALICED DOBYNS (NFK) -------------------------------- 4 JOHNB DOBYNS (GUYA) (from 1) was said by Bigland to have been the father of one SON GUYC DOBYNS (See 5) -------------------------------- 5 GUYC DOBYNS (JOHNB, GUYA) (from 4) married ELLEN ----. ELLEN DOBYNS died approximately 1536, as shown by attempts to settle her estate which started in 1536 (probably 1536/7). (fn 9) Probably GUYC DOBYNS was no longer living in 1536. ISSUE of this marriage included GUYD DOBYNS (See 8) ALEXANDERD DOBYNS (See 6) probably ROGERD DOBYNS (See 7) -------------------------------- 6 ALEXANDERD DOBYNS (GUYC, JOHNB, GUYA) (from 5) of Newent, gentleman, was married to ANN ----. In 1547, ANN DOBYNS was plaintiff in a libel action against ANN CARVER otherwise WILLIAMS of Newent. (fn 10) The acts of court are missing. In 1564, ALEXANDERD DOBY.

In December of that year he appointed HENRY DONNE to be vicar of the church. (fn 11) -------------------------------- 7 ROGERD DOBYNS (probably GUYC, JOHNB, GUYA) (from 5) married CATHERINE ----. ROGER died in 1577 and left a will. (fn 12) CATHERINE died in 1581. (fn 13) ISSUE of this marriage included GUYE DOBYNS (mentioned in father's will) ELIZABETHE DOBYNS (wife of PHILIP BOWER, mentioned in mother's estate settlement) BRIDGETE DOBYNS (mentioned in father's will) THOMASE DOBYNS (executor of father's will) MARGARETE DOBYNS LITTLE (mentioned in her mother's estate settlement) [Begin original page 3] Partial copy of a Family Tree found in the Gloucester Record Office, Gloucester, England. GUYD DOBYNS married (2nd) CATHERINE (or KATHERINE) ----, ISSUE of which marriage included, according to Bigland WILLIAME DOBYNS (See 9) The will of GUYD DOBYNS (fn 14), reproduced in manuscript form on pages 5 and 6 [NOTE: These manuscript pages are long and may take a while to load.] and transcribed hereafter, was dated 19 June 20 Henry VIII (1544) and mentions the following children: JOHNE DOBYNS the younger ALEXANDERE DOBYNS ROBERTE DOBYNS JAMESE DOBYNS WILLIAME DOBYNS JANEE (or JOAN) DOBYNS The wife KATHERINE was also mentioned. The will reads as follows: "In the name of god amen yn the yeare of oure lord god on thousand fyve hundredthe fortye and four and the xxth daye June I gye Dobyns of the paryshe of Newent hole of bodye and of mynde do make my testament yn this manner of wyse. fyrst y bequeathe to KATHN my wyffe yf god do hys wyll and send for me yn thys journey my howse yn the town of Newent and also the yndenture of modydeus and bekes medows and after the death of RICHARD CAMEDO (?) she to have the profytt of hops untyll that my son JHO DOBYNS THE YOUNGER be of the age of on and twenty yeares. and the forsayed JHO to enjoie forsayede land durynge the yeares yn the expressed and yf the forsayed JHO do dye wtout yssue of hys bodye lawfullye begotte and then y wyll it to Remayne to my son ALEXANDER, and for defaulte of yssue hym unto my son ROBART, and for lack of yssue of hym unto my son JAMES and to hys hyeres lawfully begoten, and for lacke of yssue of the f.

CATHERINE DOBYNS, the second wife of GUYD DOBYNS, was probably living in 1557. At that time, on 17 Apr 1557, Mrs. KATHERINE DOBINS was recorded in the Newent Parish Register (fn 15) as being the Godmother of RANDALL DOBINS, son of WILLIAM DOBINS, Gent. In 1535, King Henry VIII declared himself "Supreme Head of the Church of England", thus beginning the Reformation in England. While the separation of the Church of England from the Roman Catholic Church pleased many people, including Henry VIII who wanted his divorce, there were many people in England who clung to the Pope and the Roman Catholic Church. It appears that GUYD DOBYNS was among those who remained Roman Catholic and was thus styled a Papist by the supporters of the Reformation. .

It appears that GUYD DOBYNS was among those who remained Roman Catholic and was thus styled a Papist by the supporters of the Reformation. of England. CROMWELL's job was to root out Papists, among other things. Adherence to the Roman Catholic Church had gone from a requirement of the law in 1533 to a violation of the law in 1535 and later. Freedom of religion was 250 years in the womb of time, and certainly was not to be allowed by THOMAS CROMWELL's men to GUYD DOBYNS. Nor for that matter did the Pope willingly allow CROMWELL's followers their freedom of religion. Thus one should not be surprised to find that, during this period of hard feelings, GUYD DOBYNS found himself in trouble with the self-appointed religious leaders of England. Copies of two letters exist accusing GUYD DOBYNS of refusing to obey a summons to appear before the CROMWELL-controlled Council. A summary of the first letter, (fn 16) dated 16 Mar 1537/8, follows: "Letter from Bishop Roland Lee to Thomas Cromwell. One GUY DOBYNS of Newent, being summoned before this Council with his son, refused to come. His son said that he would know the mind of Sir Ant. Poynes first. About a week after, the son killed the constable of Newent and the same day the father broke from the ward of the porter of this Council and fled. The day I was in Gloucester, he was following Mr. Anth. Kyngston, (NOTE that this name is mentioned in the will above.) riding through the town with his hounds, being a J.P. of the shire, 'neither regarding God, nor the King, nor any man there.' Dated Shrowisbury." A summary of the second letter, dated 19 Mar 1537/8, follows: (fn.

Asks him to notify the President of the Council in the Marches of Wales that GUY DOBYNE, since the president left Gloucester, has always continued at home in his house at Newente. When he goes out [NOTE that this is inconsistent with previous sentence] he is accompanied by light persons in riotous array. He says he would rather be hanged than come under the lord President's hands. On Saturday he is said to have bought lampreys and had them baked at Gloucester to be sent to London. Does not know whether he has ridden with them. [NOTE that in previous sentence he was said to have always continued at home, indicating an unreliable or hearsay account.] He has someone always watching about his house for dread of the King's messengers. If the Council wish to have him, it will be necessary to award out a proclamation against him. Dated Compton." [NOTE that Compton is a small village outside the town of Newent, and that the Dobyns family lived at Compton as well as at Newent.] .
46. Dobyns (Dobbins) family history Part 9, In the shifting winds of the day, THOMAS CROMWELL lost favor with the king and was executed in 1540, primarily as a sop to the opponents of the methods used to Protestantize England. GUYD DOBYNS apparently rode out the shifting winds unharmed until his death in 1544. During the period of time that he was having trouble with CROMWELL, GUYD DOBYNS was attempting with little success to settle the estate of his mother ELLEN. (fn 18) His difficulties were probably due to the fact that he would have been arrested by the king's officers upon his appearance before the ecclesiastical court having jurisdiction over the estate. On 11 Feb 1536, letters of administration of the goods of ELEN DOBYNS, [Begin original page 8] deceased, late of Newent, were granted to GUYD DOBYNS, her natural (i.e. by birth, as opposed to a step-son, son-in-law, etc., used then in a sense that is now obsolete) and eldest son, to exhibit an inventory at the next court. On which day he was continued to the next court. Afterwards he was suspended and the case continued to 22 Jan 1538/9. He did not appear and was suspended, and on 4 Mar 1538/9 was excommunicated. -------------------------------- 9 WILLIAME DOBYNS (GUYD, GUYC, JOHNB, GUYA) (from 8) married BLANCHE WARNECOMBE of Wiltshire. Apparently WILLIAME DOBYNS shared his father's dislike for the reformed Church of England, as shown by a letter from Richard, Bishop of Gloucester, dated 20 Nov 1577, listing WILLIAM DOBBINS, having property worth 31 pounds, as among those who refused to attend church. (fn 19) .
47. Dobyns (Dobbins) family history Part 10, WILLIAME DOBYNS died approximately 1578, as shown by letters of administration (fn 20) of the goods of WILLIAM DOBYNS, late of Newent, Gloucestershire and the diocese of the city of Gloucester granted on 10 Feb 1578/9 to BLANCHE his relict, in the person of ROBERT SAY, notary public. BLANCHE DOBYNS died approximately 1592, as shown by letters of administration (fn 21) of the goods of BLANCHE DOBBINS, deceased, late of Newent, granted on 20 June 1592 to RANDOLPHF and GUYF DOBBINS her sons. Because the value of the estate was only £31/13/6, they were dismissed from the office as regards the account of 7 February 1593/4 on account of the small sum of the inventory. In the list of children which follows, it is not known whether or not GILESF DOBYNS was a son of BLANCHE DOBYNS. The children of WILLIAME DOBYNS included GILESF DOBYNS (See 10) GUYF DOBYNS (See 11) RANDALL (or RANDOLPH)F DOBYNS (See 12) --------------------------------- 10 GILESF DOBYNS (WILLIAME, GUYD, GUYC, JOHNB, GUYA) (from 9) died before RANDALLF DOBYNS wrote his will (fn 22) in 1641. Mentioned in the will of RANDALL were GYLESG DOBYNS, son of GILESF DOBYNS, and MARGARETG DOBYNS, one of the daughters of GILESF DOBYNS. GILESF DOBYNS left no will. --------------------------------- 11 GUYF DOBYNS (WILLIAME, GUYD, GUYC, JOHNB, GUYA) (from 9) died in 1611, leaving a will (fn 23) which mentioned JOHANEG DOBYNS his eldest daughter (under 21), JANEG DOBYNS his second daughter, ANNEG DOBYNS his youngest daughter, his brother RANDALLF DOBYNS, PHILLIP DOBYNS son and heir (apparent) of RANDALLF, his brother GYLESF DOBYNS, URSULA DOBYNS the wife of his brother (the brother was RANDALL), DANYEL DOBYNS his Godson (NOTE that DANYELL was son of bother RANDALL), and THOMAS DOBYNS the son of his brother (unidentified). According to GUY's will, JOHANEG DOBYNS married ---- RASTLE, and ANNEG DOBYNS married VALENTINE POWELL, clerk (i.e. clergy). -------------------------------- .
48. Dobyns (Dobbins) family history Part 11, 12 RANDALLF DOBYNS (WILLIAME, GUYD, GUYC, JOHNB, GUYA) (from 9) was baptized on 17 Apr 1557, son of WILLIAME DOBINS, gentleman. (fn 24) Godfathers were Mr. GRISKINS and Mr. JOHN DABITOT, and the Godmother was Mrs. KATHERINE DOBINS, probably the widow of GUYD DOBYNS, and the grandmother of RANDALLF DOBYNS. RANDALL attended St. Mary Hall, Oxford, and was afterwards taught the law of the land. (fn 25) RANDALLF DOBYNS married URSULA KIRLE, daughter of ROBERT KIRLE of Walford, Herefordshire, Esq. 49. Dobyns (Dobbins) family history Part 12, When King Charles I of England, in about 1628, attempted to raise money without the aid of Parliament, he offered the honor of knighthood to numerous gentlemen of the land in exchange for a substantial payment from each gentleman. This honor was offered to RANDALLF DOBYNS, who was among the many who refused to accept. Charles I then added, as an additional money raising measure, a fine for all those gentlemen who had refused to accept the expensive honor. Between 1630 and 1632, RANDALL DOBYNS of Newent was fined £14/0/0 for not taking the honor of knighthood. An early writer (fn 29) states that "Giles Nansan, Esq. and RANDALL DOBYNS, Gent. gave by deeds in 1631 and 1639, and William Roberts, Gent in 1690, whether by Deed or Will is uncertain, an Almes House, consisting of Ten Tenements with Gardens, for Poor Parishioners. They were doing good selling furs to traders from the East. Some Cherokees evidently felt that the two white men were hurting their trading ventures. Benjamin and Chandler were taken captive and taken before a Council of Chieftains to be dealt with. The usual punishment was to run the gauntlet (two parallel lines of brave stabbing and slashing with knives and lances.) If the captive survived this, they were then burned at the stake. Benjamin and Chandler were sentences to be burned at the right phase of the moon. An Indian girl was assigned the task of providing food and water for the men. Benjamin became friendly with her and gained her confidence. He promised to marry her if she would help them escape. She secured their freedom and was married to Benjamin. Her name was Moonglow but she later took the Christian name of Susanne Hurst. Benjamin and Moonglow had 10 children. Benjamin died on July 12, 1849 in Moon, Morgan County. Susannah died in 1846 also in Moon. They are buried on a small flat above the creek, shaded by large trees native to this area behind the old Moon Post Office. Benjamin served in the Revolutionary War from 1780-1782 as a Spy and a Ranger. The local chapters of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Sons of the American Revolution from Paintsville, Johnson County, dedicated a monument to Benjamin on October 22, 1995 in Moon, Morgan County.
