Descendants of Adam Moses 09/02/2008

      55. Martha Jane5 Moses (Samuel Ferris4, Peter3, Johann Adam2, Johann Peter1) was born 1818 in Virginia, and died Bet. 1880 - 1900 in Osage, Allen County, Kansas. She married Robert J. Tucker December 20, 1839 in Charlotte County, Virginia. He was born 1824 in Virginia, and died Bet. June 06 - July 07, 1870 in Missouri or Kansas.

Notes for Martha Jane Moses:
Could this entry be for Samuel's daughter Martha?

Marriage Index: KY, NC, TN, VA, WV, 1728-1850

Tucker, Robert J.      Spouse : Moses, Martha Jane
      Marriage date : Dec 20, 1839

Charlotte County, VA

Marriage Notes for Martha Moses and Robert Tucker:
1) Marriage Index: KY, NC, TN, VA, WV, 1728-1850

Tucker, Robert J.      Spouse : Moses, Martha Jane
      Marriage date : Dec 20, 1839

(Charlotte County, VA)

Note: I have no actual proof that this Martha is the daughter of Samuel Ferris Moses, but the facts appear to fit

Addendum: Proof has been found in the form of a list of children from Samuel's will; daughter Martha is listed there as "Jane Tucker".

2) 1850 census for Virginia, Botetourt County, Western District (District 8), enumerated August 26th, 1850 (image 154 of 266 at Ancestry.com):

[Note 1: The child named Zedediah W., or Jedediah W. (hard to read) is apparently also known as Wesl(e)y Tucker later in life]
[Note 2: Living right next door to the family headed by Elizabeth Tucker, age 60, with Priscilla, Minney, Frances, Mary and Amanda living there as well -- perhaps the mother and sisters of Robert J. Tucker]

3) 1850 census for Virginia, Botetourt County, Western District (District 8), enumerated August 26th, 1850 (image 152 of 266):

Dwelling 1018, visit 1018 --

In the household of Charles Scott, whose occupation is listed as Canal Contractor, 3 men with the occupation of Carpenter were listed, among them:

Robert J. Tucker, age 29, M, Carpenter, born in Virginia

[Note 1: Though the ages listed are different, the occupations are the same; I believe it is quite possible that both of these 1850 listings are for the same Robert, with this second listing being his place of employment.]

4) 1860 census for Missouri, Johnson County, Jefferson Township, Wall's Store Post Office, Page no. 325, enumerated September 16th, 1860 (image 32 of 34 at Ancestry.com):

5) 1870 census for Missouri, Lafayette County, City of Lexington, Lexington Post Office, Page no. 4 (handwritten), enumerated June 6th, 1870 (image 54 of 160 at Ancestry.com):

Dwelling 22, Visit 31 --

Tucker Robert, age 68, M, W, Carpenter, Real estate = 500, born in Virginia, male age 21 or over
_____ Martha, age 62, F, W, Keeping House, born in Virginia
_____ Mary, age 40, F, W, At home, born in Virginia

[Note 1: It is not at all certain that this is the same family; this Robert, Martha & Mary are quite a bit older according to their ages listed here than the ones in this tree. Of course, census enumerators have been known to record incorrect ages in the past....]

[Note 2: Daughter Mary E. Tucker was already married by 1870; perhaps she is the only child living with her parents in MIssouri in 1870, perhaps to help take care of her father, who may have been very ill at the time, if indeed this is the same family]

6) 1870 census for Kansas, Allen County, Osage Township, Ozark Post Ofiice, Page No. 2 (handwritten), 83 (stamped), enumerated July 7, 1870 (image 1 of 11 at Ancestry.com):

______ James, age 12, M, W, Works on farm, born in Missouri

______ Martha J., age 15, F, W, Attending school, born in Virginia

______ Laura A., age 5, F, W, born in Kansas

[Note 1: It's possible that the entry above and this entry for the 1870 census are both for the same family, but clearly the father Robert Tucker was not present in Kansas, so may have died during this one month's time]

7) 1880 census for Kansas, Allen County, Osage Township, Supervisor's District No. 1, Enumeration District No. 10, Page No. 5 (handwritten), 110A (stamped), enumerated June 2nd and 3rd, 1880 (image 5 of 19 at Ancestry.com):

Pierce George W., W. M, age 30, Boarder, Widowed, Farming, born in Illinois, father born in New York, mother born in Ohio

[Note 1: I have no idea why George W. Pierce is listed as a boarder, as he appears to be the father of young Marion; he should have been listed as a son-in-law. I do not know which daughter of Robert & Martha was Marion's mother.]

[Note 2: Living right next door to Martha is the 39-year-old widow Celestia A. Thomas (born in Virginia), who may well be Martha's daughter. There are 5 children living with Celestia, including Lewellen, Alice P., Nellie M., Mary E., and Ernest A.]

[Note 3: Martha J. Tucker is not found in any future census entries, but her son Wesley is still living in Osage, Allen County, Kansas by 1900; presumably Martha died sometime between 1880 and 1900]
