Descendants of Adam Moses 09/02/2008

      78. William Walker5 Moses (Joseph Monroe 'Monroe'4, Peter3, Johann Adam2, Johann Peter1) was born April 11, 1836 in Cumberland County, Virginia, and died May 10, 1902. He married Fannie White Graves January 07, 1866 in Pittsylvania County, VA, daughter of Jeremiah Graves and Catherine Boxley. She was born June 18, 1833 in Mt. Airy, Pittsylvania County, VA, and died September 16, 1907 in Level Run, Pittsylvania County, VA.

Notes for William Walker Moses:
1) From Virginia and the Virginians, p. 799:

"Appointed superintendent of the Virginia Penitentiary in December, 1885, and still holding that position, was born in Cumberland County, Virginia, on April 11, 1836. He attended a private school in Appomattox county, and then began farming which he has followed to date. He settled in Pittsylvania county, Virginia, married in that county, on January 7, 1866, and was six years justice of the peace in that county, and four years member of the district school board. He entered the Confederate States army as a private in Company K, 14th Tennessee Infantry; was wounded at Fredericksburg, December 13, 1862; was taken prisoner at Gettysburg, and held at Fort Delaware twenty-two months, then paroled."

"Joseph M. Moses, father of William W., son of Peter Moses, of England, was born in Appomattox county, and died in 1879, aged sixty-five years. The mother of William W., Paulina J. Martin, born in Prince Edward county, died July 10, 1858. His wife, born in Pittsylvania county, is Fannie W., daughter of Jeremiah W. Graves, who died in 1882, and Catharine (Baxley) Graves, also now deceased. Mr. and Mrs. Moses have three children, Wm. Wl Jr., Graves M., Kate O., and have buried two, Dula W., died July 1873, aged one year; Joseph M., died February, 1878, aged ten months. Mr. Moses and wife are members of the Second Baptist Church of Richmond."

[Some of the information from Virginia and the Virginians is known to be inaccurate. Peter Moses did not come from England, but was instead born in Pennsylvania -- Peter's father Adam Moses came from Germany in 1743. Some of the names and dates also do not match information supplied by descendants.]
