Descendants of Adam Moses 09/02/2008

      81. Charles Thomas5 Moses (Joseph Monroe 'Monroe'4, Peter3, Johann Adam2, Johann Peter1) was born September 14, 1844 in Buckingham County, Virginia, and died November 23, 1896 in Appomattox County, Virginia. He married Mary 'Molly or Mollie' Woodson April 22, 1867 in Appomattox County, Virginia, daughter of Drury Woodson and Louisa Hendrick. She was born March 29, 1846 in Appomattox County, Virginia, and died January 15, 1940 in Vera, Appomattox County, Virginia.

Notes for Charles Thomas Moses:
1) Appomattox County was formed from part of Buckingham County in 1845.

2) Death certificate lists his occupation as farmer, but does not identify parents.

3) From William Smith Moses:

"Great grandpa was a member of the 18th Infantry, Company "H", known as The Appomattox Grays. Entered the service October 25, 1862 and rose from private to sergeant. Was captured at Sailors Creek April 6, 1865 and paroled June 8, 1865"

Notes for Mary 'Molly or Mollie' Woodson:
1) Mary Molly/Mollie Woodson is a descendant of John Woodson who immigrated to America in 1619 on the ship George in the capacity of surgeon to the colonists at Jamestown, VA.

2) A 1950's newspaper article referred to her as the late Mary Mollie (Woodson) Moses, but conflicting information gives her name as Mary Walker Woodson.

3) Mary's mother was known as The Doughgirl for her efforts at baking bread for the soldiers of both sides of the Civil War on the day of the surrender in Appomattox.

4) Mary's brother John Woodson was a lawyer who died during the Civil War; his law office is preserved at the Appomattox National Historic Park.

5) 1920 census -- Mary W. Moses is living in the home of her son Leonard.

6) 1930 census -- Mary Moses is living in the home of her son Leonard.

7) Library of Virginia Digital Library Program Military Records has a copy of the Confederate Pension Application filed by Mary W. Moses after the death of her husband:
