      25. Dora Grubb9, born October 09, 1869 in Liberty Township, east of Beecher City, IL; died December 11, 1949 in Decatur, IL - bur. Oconee, IL9. She was the daughter of 50. Bazzel Grubb and 51. Minerva Miller.

Notes for Samuel Oscar Nichols:
very adept at clerical/numerical work and preferred this to farming. worked as shop clerk around Tower Hill in younger years. was offered the opportunity, via Charlie and John Grubb, to have a farm near Shelbyville, but wasnt interested. worked at the middlebrook farm in shelbyville after marriage to dora. dora worked in the house, sam in the fields. they rented the rogers farm south of oconee until the rogers decided they wanted the house and land back to live in and farm. then moved into the wilmer place, right across the road. lived in the rogers house in town. sam was on many boards and ran the co-op. liked being involved. not necessarily very kind to the children (girls) or dora. sarah heard remark made to sam once when she was teaching school that the person didnt even know sam had girls! sam was a taskmaster, dora got up, started the fire and made breakfast, the children ran the farm at sams direction. machinery was too expensive, the children did all the work, using horses. sam was very well respected in the community. upon his death remark was made - we have lost a very good friend in sam nichols. always was willing to help anyone in anyway. lover of croquet. saw to it that the bells always rang at the methodist church. church burned down and was rebuilt ?

  Notes for Dora Grubb:
Liked to raise chickens. Stayed with brother Amos after their parents died. Sarah Nichols Ballou said it was believed that Amos was told by his parents to never let the family seperate. Following his parents deaths, with much difficulty, he did manage to hold the family together. Dora had the primary task of running the kitchen and keeping up the household for Amos. Gene Grubb told me Dora used to ride her horse down to Dexter, IL to visit her grandmother and cousins. According to Sarah Nichols Ballou, Dora was not very fond of dogs, and was constantly shooing them from the house in Oconee. Dora passed on blocks for a quilt made by her sister Nancy to daughter Sarah. Dora had never found the time to put it together. Sarah finished it and exhibited it last year (1996).
