I'm a very proud Bermudian born "Tatem". A descendant of Samuel Tatam (note spelling) who was one of the earlier settlers of the island in the early 1600's. Samuel, was a mariner, planter, trader and member of Warwick Tribe. The first record found of Samuel was in early 1626, when he signed a plea for growing tobacco in answer to the Company of the City of London for the Plantation of the Somers Islands. Bermuda, has been a story of adventure since it's discovery in 1503 by Juan De Bermudez, a Spanish mariner. It was known as The Deuills Islands by the superstitious fears of sixteenth century sea-farers. Combined with the natural defences of the reefs that encircled the islands it made Bermuda a grim and scowling fortress. It was said "Hells Infernal Dogs" held siege to all comers. The evil reputation of the islands was the result of sea-faring experience, however, for mariners who escaped from the peril of shipwreck, in these waters, could testify to have seen the dark shapes of "Deuills" on shore; also the mocking, half human cries of "Faries On The Rocks", a sound of natures course--"That who so heares doth dy".
William Starchy's narrative 1610
"It pleased our merciful God to make even this hideous place both the place of our safetie and meanes of our deliverance".

Note: I was raised on "Tatem's Hill" Spanish Point, Pembroke, Bermuda, until the age of 12. My father Inglis "Joe" Tatem and I immigrated to Victoria, British Columbia, Canada on the 14 September, 1957. There once was a fire that burnt with great intensity when I thought of "Tatem's Hill", the place I once called home. But, frequently as is the case the flames vanish, the fire dies away leaving only the ashes to retain the heat and remnants of ones ardent thoughts.
