The oral history goes: when Elisabeth was young, she used to work at the
forge "like a man", because the sons in the family were too young. (A
"forge" is a furnace for heating metal to be wrought into shape...a
smith.) Elisabeth was carrying on the family trade from the mad
blacksmith.
