Pitt County, North Carolina Deed Book G, page 430, 21 October 1782:
      To all to whom these Presents shall come, Greeting: Know ye that we, for and in consideration of the sum of Fifty Shillings for every hundred acres hereby granted, paid into our treasury by HENRY TANTON, have given and granted, and by these presents do give and grant unto the said HENRY TANTON a tract of land containing one hundred and fifty acres, lying and being in our county of Pitt on the south side of Tarr River and on north side of Williams Mill Creek, beginning at a pine on the creek side and runs north eleven pole into Hy__s line thence with his line south sixty degrees west fifty four poles to a white oak then with his other line north seventy degrees west one hundred and thirty poles to a pine then west forty pole to a black oak thence south two hundred pole to a black oak then east forty eight pole to a white oak by the side of the said creek and into Williams line, thence down the windings of the creek to the beginning as by the plat hereunto annexed doth appear; together with all woods, waters, mines, minerals, hereditaments and appurtenances, to the said land belonging or appertaining: To hold to the said HENRY TANTON, his heirs and assigns forever. Yielding and paying to us such sums of money yearly, or otherwise, as our General Assembly from time to time may direct. Provided always that the said HENRY TANTON shall cause this Grant to be registered in the Registrar's office of our said county of Pitt within twelve months from the date hereof. Otherwise the same shall be void and of no effect.
      In Testimony Whereof, we have caused our great seal to be hereunto affixed.
      Witness, Alex. Martin, Esquire, our Governor, Captain-General, and Commander-in-Chief, at Fairfield, the twenty first of October, in the eighth year of our Independence, and in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and eighty two.

      This Indenture Made this 10 day of February and year Seven hundred & eighty seven Between Thomas Downs of the county of Pitt & state of North Carolina Bricklayer of the one part & TAUNTON of the county & state afsd. planter of the other part Witnesseth that the sd Thomas Downs for & In consideration of the sum of fifteen pounds to him in hand paid at or before the sealing & delivery of these presents by the sd HENRY TANTON the Receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged & myself therewith fully _____ contented & paid have given granted bargained sold alineated conveyed & confirmed & by these presents doth absolutely sell unto ___ the said HENRY TANTON one certain tract or parcel of land lying & being in Pitt County & State afsd. on the [south?] side of Tar River and on the north side of Thomas Mill Creek, Beginning at a Maple in ___ the M___n branch in [Hoagens/Hoagers?] line, then along a __ntrail ___ to the sd Downs back line then along the back line to ___ Powers line thence along sd Powers to the bear pond ___ sd Downs line to HENRY TANTONs line thence TANTONs line [to?] Hodges line thence Hodges line to the first station it being part of a tract of land the sd Downs obtained __ Grant from the [state?] bearing date 1782 the above bargained & D___sed premises containing one hundred & fifty acres more or less to have and to hold the [said] tract or parcell of land and all the appurtenances thereunto belonging to him the sd HENRY TANTON his heirs and assigns for __ free & Clear from the lawfull Claim or demand of any person or persons whatsoever & I the sd Thomas Downs for my self my heirs Exrs & Administrators do warrant & will forever defend the above said land to him the sd HENRY TANTON his heirs & assigns forever In Witness whereof I have hereunto Set my hand & seal thi day and year first above written.

      This Indenture made this thirtieth day of January one thousand seven hundred and ninety eight between HENRY TANTON of the one part and William Johnston of the other part both of the County of Pitt and State of North Carolina Witnesseth that for and in consideration of the Sum of two hundred pounds to me in hand paid by the aforesaid William Johnston before the Recording of these presents I have bargained and sold and conveyed unto the said William Johnston a certain Tract or parcel of land containing Four Hundred and Eighty Acres of land lying on the north side of Williams Mill Creek Beginning at a pine on the North Side of Said Williams Mill Creek at a pine and TANTONs corner thence with __ line North Eleven pole to a pine Downs corner Now Blands Corner thence with his other South ____ West fifty four poles to a black oak his other corner then with said [Tarlance?] and Blands line North Seventy ___ one hundred and thirty pole to a pine sd. To have and to hold the above bargained premises together with all the hereditaments and appertenances unto the said land belonging or in any wise appertaining which the said HENRY TANTON do for my self my heirs or assigns for ever against the lawfull claims of any person or persons whatsoever in Witness whereof I have herunto set my hand and fixed my Seal the day & date above Mentioned.
