Addressed to: Mr. John D. Taylor Montgomary County, Texas Taylor's Creek W County August 20th 1843 Dear Son,
Your two much esteemed letters of the 28th February and 5th June has been received the former two or three months after date, but the latter on the 14th July dated from Lake Creek which are all that has been received from you. In both of these you express and convey the welcome and much admired information of your good health and your folks likewise and next to that of health, that you seem to enjoy sattisfaction and peace of mind, pleased still with the country and a fare prospect of being abundently rewarded by a good crop in return for the hard labour you speak of having performed, these are considerations highly gratifying to us. We are enjoying tolerable health heare for which we feel thankful, Louisa's {or Louise's}son Douglass has had a long lingering spell but is now getting well, some of the negroes has been, and at present sick Esther and old Adam but are both on the mend. Dr. Fiske and your Aunt Eliza has joind and are members of the Methodist Church, a camp meeting at Zion has just come off, after a session of 8 days at which it is said 25 imbraced religion, several of our neighbors children have joined Abner & Mary I Taylor Fletcher Erwin & wife and to your astonishment Daved Erwin has become temperate & imbraced religion. I defeated AP Irwin in his application for Bankruptcy and he was forced to withdraw his application and pay the cost after incuring all the odiam and execrations of an incenced surrounding community, and subjecting himself to a prosecution for forgery and perjury also, which I could have proved him quickly of since which James has paid me $122 the proceads of the sales of his property under a (?) deed for the sattisfaction of my debt, this sale was made last fall while I was gone to the Western District and property purchased by Porter for little or nothing, and the money not paid until lately. This payment has been made because the Trustee was liable and I intended to make him so by said had the money not been paid. I expect to file a Bill against AP Irwin and his father and try to subject Porters land to the sattisfaction of my debt, this I must and will do except they secure the ultimate payment. It is the only alternative or loose my debt in that {letter damaged} I shall have to obtain your testimony except (damaged) will admit in his answer the execution of the {damaged} to Porter or I can prove it by others. Mary {damaged} come home with me last fall from the District and is still heare, her father has not been up heare nor has he paid me any more money he will be (?) this fall. We have had a verry wet summer and corn crops are generally good. Wheat rye oats & flax are tolerable the former much better then for three previous years, but only small crops for there was but little sewn, I had only 22 acres in its tolerably good I have 20 acres in artichokes that are verry fine, we should like to know how the different seed of various (?) the soil and climate of your country, that you took with you. I should also wish and even desireous to know how Esaw behaves himself, tell him I hope to heare that he has become a better and more obedient boy than he was heare, say if Ruth is a good & smart girl. Thomas & Isaac wishes to know how your dogs stood the jurney & if you have them yet. I see President Houstons proclimation for an armestic and sesation of hostilityes on the part of Texas towards Mexico with a view of a treaty between the two countries. I much desire the earliest information reletive to the negociation, and the final result should any thing be effected I fear even if both parties act in good faith, (and that is even to be doubted) that the boundary will produce a disagreement except the respective parties act on a spirit of Concesion and Compromise. Isaac Taylor
