RANK BERRY HINTON:
The following was written by O.K. Davis, Executive Sports Editor and published 1/23/00 in The Ruston Leader.

BERRY HINTON, ex-Tech Coach, dies at 89

Berry Hinton, one of the most dynamic and successful figures in Louisiana Tech University athletic history, died on Saturday afternoon following a lengthy illness. He was 89.

Funeral services are pending.

Hinton served for 25 years as the head baseball coach for the Bulldogs, beginning a long and honor-filled career in 1943 and continuing through the 1967 season.

Well known and highly respected by his peers in the profession, Hinton compiled an overall record of 316-206 and 211-125 mark against conference opponents only.

For 18 years, he coached and taught in the Arkansas school system before joining the Tech staff and beginning a career that would earn him numerous "Coach of the Year" accolades and conference championships.

Hinton had three Bulldogs' teams win 20 or more games including his 23-victory editions of 1965 and 1966. His 1961 team had a 21-6 record and recorded its best-ever Gulf States Conference mark of 15-4. Of the 23 squads he directed at Tech, only three suffered losing records.

Highly personable and renowned for his quick wit and anecdotes. 'Coach Berry' began building the bulldogs' diamond program into a consistent winner right after World War II.

He was one of the best athletes ever to play at Tech, starring in three sports: baseball, football and basketball. In three years he earned eight varsity letters. His 300-plus victory total featured eight conference championships."
