Confederate War Records: Private in Co H, 50th North Carolina Infantry (State Troops). Mustered into service April 21, 1862, from Lillington, NC. Enrolled for service February 25 in Lillington by Joseph Atkinson. Subsequent pay records indicated enlisted for "3 years or the war" and was paid by E. W. Adams. Paroled by the Union at Salisbury, NC on May 2, 1865, with an indicated residence of Summerville, NC.
Family lore, from Franklin Arwood Taylor, via Nancy Trent, was that the McPhails arrived in America from Scotland by boat, disembarking at Lillington after sailing up the Cape Fear River, all unsubstantiated.
Notes for MATTIE BRANCH:
As reported by Diane Atkinsson, the Register of Deeds in the Robeson County Courthouse list Rosa Lee's mother as Mattie Faircloth. John L.'s obituary names his wife as Mattie Branch, sister to S.A. and J. A. Branch. A photograph, taken around the very early 1900's, is captioned with the older woman sitting beside John L. as Mazzie Fawucett. So John's wife is still a mystery???
