Notes for Mary Ann Maitland: LDS Church data: B: 22 Oct 1977, Ogden Temple, Ref. #8332603 62 X/N 00179-2 066 04 E: 9 Dec 1977, Ogden Temple Sealing to Parents: 1 Feb 1984, Atlanta Temple, Family File Entry 7710412 60 From Grace Spaeth to Sally DiSabatino & Melba Taylor 9/84 in San Bernardino, CA: Mary's dad, Bill Maitland worked for Hines-Weyerhauser Lumber Co., Park Falls, WI, and they lived in a company house...a beautiful house w/a big, winding staircase and a beautiful dining room. Mary had a beauiful bedroom. The kids attended Park Falls H.S. Mary could play the piano beautifully by ear; she could play any song you mentioned. She had beautiful braids. She was kind of pudgy as she was growing up, and she dressed to minimize that. The Maitlands were well-to-do, and Mary had nice clothes. Nettie's and Bill's divorce bothered her and the other children. At the time of the divorce, Bud, Bill and Mary went with their mother. Pat stayed w/his father. In a letter dated 19 June 1966, Mary Steyer told melba, her daughter, this story: "When I was a little girl in Park Falls, there was an Irish family named Coffey, and they were really dirty. But we kids in the neighborhood loved to go to their house ot play because Mrs. Coffey was easygoing, and we could do as we pleased. There were 10 children in the family. Anyway, they had bed bugs, and whenever I came home from the Coffey's, my mother would check me from head to toe as well as my dolls and doll clothes before I could come in our house. Perhaps there is something now to rid a place of them, at the time, they sprayed everything with gasoline and even tht wasn't foolproof. They get into walls, clothes, and mattresses, and have a very decided and unpleasant odor. 24 Jan 1966 Mary Ann Maitland in a letter to daughter, Melba: "I ws named after the two grandmothers." I never heard a cross word between my parents. Both Mother or Dad would paddle the boys when they did wrong. I was always sent to my room to think it over." 30 May 1981 Letter from Willette Wallace, member of Museum Staff of Greenwood County Historical Society, Eureka, KS; she said she as a senio in high school in Eureka in 1925, and "Iknew your mother. She was a sophomore that year, but her name was not listed in subsequent years of the h.s. yearbooks. I remember they lived just across the street from the high school. I can see her in a white Navy-style middi blouse and navy colored pleated skirt. She had very dark hyair and was a good looking girl. From college records & yearbk: In 1927, Mary attended Southwest Texas State University (then SWTS Teachers College). Lyndon B. Johnson, who later became Pres. of the United States, was a student there at the same time. A list of the courses Mary took are in the Maitland file. I haven't found that LBJ wrote in Mary's annual; they might not have even known one another. Letter from Christ Lutheran Church, May 1981: "Mary Maitland became an adult church member by confirmation on 20 Apr 1924." Mary's oldest daughter, Sally, said on 31 Jan 1988, that she remembers Mary being "intuitive". She knew when a letter was coming or whatever. Ashes moved February 1998.
