Descendants of Calvin Earp

Generation No. 1

1. CALVIN2 EARP (JOSEPH1) was born Abt. 1810 in NC, and died 1866 in Benton County, AR. He married ANNA LIZA (OR ELIZA) GRAHAM October 01, 1840 in Benton, MO, daughter of JOHN GRAHAM and JANE. She was born December 1825 in TN.

Notes for C
ALVIN EARP:
Still need to verify that John is Calvin's first Name.

Calvin purchased land on 01 July, 1859 in Benton County, AR. 40 acres was purchased in Section 14, Township 20N, Range 33W.

Calvin was killed by a rolling band of bushwhackers. This is according to his g-g-granddaughter Elsie Lee Sanders. (Special Thanks to Ginny in sharing this story)

Calvin died between 1865 & 1870. This is during the time of the Civil War. There is a "J.C.Earp" listed in the 50th Ark. Militia, during the time of the 'Battle of Pea Ridge" or "Elk Tavern", in Benton County, AR. Don't know if this is our Calvin, yet.

1-4-2003 Today I received a copy of (which looks like an index card) of J.C. Earp Co. G, 50th AR Militia. Card #45019375. Number of medical cards herein 0; Number of personal papers herein 0; Period of service March 7, 186_ to March 9, 186_. Went in as a Private, came out as a Private.

1850 census, Calvin Arp, in Beattie Township, Benton County, AR Calvin age 40, pob NC.

1860 Census, C. Earp, in Wallace Township, Spavinaw, Benton County, AR, Calvin's age as being 50. Both shows that he was a farmer & born in NC. On the 1860 (last name being spelled as Arp) census shows "Value of real estate of $80.00 & Value of personal property of $225.00".

Have not been able to find anything before this.

My Mom picked up a copy of a page from 'Delaware County History', printed sometime in the 70's. It's a story on the Earps'. It is word for word.

      EARP AND ROBERTS STORY

The elder John Earp settled in the Delaware district in the 1880's. His eldest son, James Earp, married Margaret Renfro of Centerpoint and they had six children: 1) Maggie, the oldest, married John Thompson and they had four boys; Lawrence, Elmer, Orvil and Cecil. 2) Lila died with smallpox. 3) Tom married Maggie McLaughlin, they had six children: Jay B., long-time superintendent of schools at Jay (his story is told elsewhere in this book, Josh drowned on Easter Sunday in 1938 in Spavinaw Creek; Cecil, Carrie, Janice and Lela. 4) Callies married Audrey Roberts; they had seven children: Vestal married Velta Elam, Beulah married Ellis McWilliams, Ruth Married Ila Woods, George married Nellie Wilson, Ruby married Lester Woods, Juanita married Loren Hamilton, and Max is a successful businessman in Tulsa. 5) Lee Married Walter Evans and they have two children, Tommie and Ernest. 6) Babe married Jim Allen, they have five children: Opal, Hayden, Betty, Erma Lee and Lulu.

The story goes on to talk about another John Earp (which I believe maybe James' brother) and the Roberts Family.

What I can't understand is if Calvin died in 1866, is this John Earp his brother, or is it a typo.

1-03-2003 Today I received a copy of James' death certificate, & it states Calvin Earp is his father.

2-6-2003 Dennis Earp, email dearp@hspower.com, emailed me today with his story of Calvin:

Calvin and his son Will, were killed by Murph Harmon, leader of a gang of jayhawkers abolitionist guerrillas in 1866. Calvin and his son were working in the field near their house when they rode by and shot them. Calvin was killed immediately, but Will lived long enough to crawl back to the house and tell his family who shot them. Harmon and his gang terrorized residents of the 4-state area. (NW Ark, SW Mo, NE Ok, & SE Kan) during the Civil War (1864-1867). They would ride up to a house, ramsack it and shoot their cows and pigs. People would hide their livestock so that the jayhawkers couldn't find them.

Thanks Dennis for the story.

Occupation: farmer

Notes for A
NNA LIZA (OR ELIZA) GRAHAM:
1850 Census, her name shows at Ann, age 24. Beatie Twp. Benton Co., AR. Dated 16 Oct 1850.

1860 shows at Eliza, age 30. Wallace Twp, Benton Co., AR. Dated 18 Jun 1860.

1870, shows Ann, age 45. Living with daughter Nancy. Round Prairie Twp., Benton Co., AR. Dated 1 Aug 1870.

1880 Anna, age 57, living with son Joseph, Cedar Twp., Crawford Co., AR. Dated 25 & 26 Jun 1880.

1890 Annie L, age 72, #in household: 4; arrived in Cher.Na. 1888; census page #16.
This, of course, is a typed transcribed copy. It's a typo on her age, which should be 62. And the # in household could be Nancy & Issac children after their death, she moved to Indian Territory, where son, James had already been there a year. She must have traveled with her other son, John, it shows he arrived in Indian Territory in 1888.

1900 Anna Liza, age 75, DOB Dec 1828, living with son James in Cherokee Nation, T22N, R24E. Dated 4 Jun 1900.

Haven't found her on 1910. Probably deceased now, but when? From what I can tell, Ann lead a rough life. Not only did she raised her children, but she help raise her grandchildren. She lived with several of her children & seems like she was always moving.

After the death of Calvin, Anna went to live with her daughter & son-in-law, Nancy Ataline & Issac Aikins.

Like Calvin, have not found anything before 1850. She would probably be living with her parents then, but don't know her parents name, all census show her birth place as TN.

On the 1850 Census there is a John Graham, age 48, & Jane Graham, age 44, living next door. Are these her parents?

According to Ginny's Grandmother, after the death of her daughter Nancy, Anna moved back to AR to help raise her grandchildren. Nancy died in 1886.

Dennis Earp story:

After Calvin & Will were killed, Eliza made a home and went on with the business of raising her family. She was said to have been a small woman, but had lots of grit and spunk. The family survived by raising most of the food and hunting wild game. One time Eliza had the children gathering corn and some Indians came by and were going to take the corn they had picked. Sher was on horseback and had a large switch in her hands, which she used on the Indians. They would run and laugh, thinking it was funny that such a small woman alone would take on the entire group with a switch, and finally left without the corn.

According to Dennis, John & Jane are her parents.

Thanks Dennis.

  Notes for NELSON T. EARP:
AKA Nelse Earp.

2-6-2003 Dennis Earp story:

Fred Shackelford said his mother told him that one time while she was staying at Grandma Eliza, (Nelse's mother), that Uncle Nelse wanted to go to a dance and Grandma didn't want him to go. He went anyway and came home tired and drunk and passed out. Grandma sewed him up in a sheet and beat him good, knowing she could not punish him otherwise since she was so much smaller than Nelse.

Nelson Earp, or Nelse as he was called by the family, never married. He was known to drink and gamble, and spent most of his time in the Cookson Hills with the moon shiners and outlaws. He cursed a lot and when he came to visit relatives, would say "God Damn! Why don't you get out of these sticks where you can see something." Then he would go back to the Cookson Hills, which was really the boondocks, or so the family said. Uncle Nelse had white hair and would put shoe polish on it to make it black. He also rubbed tobacco juice in his eyes so he could see. Nelse was ran over and killed by a train at Wagner, OK. No one knows how he got on the tracks or why he was there. Little Bill (my dad) could remember when he was killed and his father (Bob) and Tom Earp went to identify the remains. When found, he had been dead about a month and all that was left was his teeth, skull, and some bones.

Thanks Dennis.
