Parker served undr Capt Daniel Smith in Company of Fincastle soldiers(found on FTM homepage of Bryan David Hall). Parker may have had children with daughter of Chief Cornstalk of Shawnee, named Blue Sky, and her Christian name may have been Mary. In 1774 General Andrew Lewis' colonists defeated Cornstalk at Pt. Pleasant. In 1777 Chief Cornstalk and his son Red Hawk were murdered by white settlers.

THIS IS ONE OF MY ADKINS LINES, I DESCEND FROM PARKER'S DAUGHTER JANE WHO MARRIED MICHAEL HARLESS.

There is a Parker Adkins (b. c1745) and his uncle Parker V. Adkins (b.

1720/1725). Harless researchers have Irene Jane Adkins, wife of Michael

Harless, as the d/o Parker V. even though either of these Parkers have dates

that would work From my notes, Parker V. was the one who may have been

involved with Blue Sky, and Parker V.'s daughter Charity may have been a

daughter of theirs. But I think Blue Sky was supposed to have been killed

in 1774. So either Irene Jane was born before 1776, Blue Sky survived the

massacre that was supposed to have been her end, or Irene Jane had a

different mother.

Notes for Jr. David Pauley:

This David Polley set his slave, Douglas Polly, free upon his death through his will. Douglas bought his family from the Campbells with the intent of bringing them to Kentucky to set them free. When the Campbells heard of this, they kidnapped

the slaves and brought them back to Virginia (Now Wayne County, WV) and resold them to a man named Justice. The court was held in Ohio to resolve this matter. On 02-27-1851, they were ordered free again, only to have the case appealed. The

appeals court freed 4 of the blacks in 1853. The other 4 had been sold into Virginia before due process could be made. One died and one gave birth to a child while proceedings were going on. They were fred by Cabell County Courts, but the

action was reversed on appeal because it was a Wayne County situation and Cabell County had no jurisdiction. In 1856, the matter was renewed in Wayne County, but nothing ever came of it. It appears the other 4 were never released.

Hi Wanda,

Yes, I have been to where the town of "Priestley" used to be- it was named

for my Great grand-father Fletcher Mitchell Priestley, whose store was also the

post office for awhile. I live just west of Charleston, about 20 minutes away

from there.

There is a sign on Rt. 119 going S. from Charleston, just into Lincoln Co., for

"Priestley Ridge." It is where the old family cemetery is and also another

cemetery named the "Priestley-Pate" cemetery. I think our Samuel Priestley

ancestor might have been buried up on the top of the ridge in the old family

cemetery.

It's a good walk throught the woods to the top of the hill. There are some

marked graves, but some of the old graves just have stones for markers. I don't

know where Samuel's wives Isabella and Polly were buried, but most of my branch

were buried here and in the Forks of Coal Cem. at Alum Creek. They attended the

Cobbs Creek Church in Lincoln County.

I think the area where "Priestley" was is now McCorkle, but I get it confused

with Alum Creek. It was also called "Rome" at one time.

Glad you enjoy what I sent. I don't really have much on your branch and would

love to find out more. All I had was one child for Elizabeth Priestley and

Solomon Pauley - Surilda Pauley b. Abt. 1837. I didn't even have James E.

Pauley.

Do you have when Solomon and Elizabeth died and where they are buried? I guess

this is Solomon in the 1860 census... don't have the actual census info, do you?

3) DANIEL M. PRIESTLEY (b. 1835, in Lincoln Co., (W) VA; d. 1917, in

Lincoln Co., WV; m. 4 Jan 1858, to Ellen BOWMAN);

4) GEORGE BAXTER PRIESTLEY (b. 28 Nov 1839, in Benton Co., MO; d. 20 Mar

1883, in Priestley, WV; m112 Dec 1861, in Charleston, WV, to Amanda STEPHENS, m2

ca. 1875-78 to Amanda HILL), and

5) ZACHARIAH B. PRIESTLEY (b. 28 Nov 1843, in Benton Co., MO; d. 11 Nov

1933,in Hillsdale, Kansas; m. 3 Jan 1866, in Charleston, WV, to Margaret Mariah

KING).

POLLY's father, MARSHALL BOWMAN, (her mother, Betheland?), and some of her

siblings, had moved to Benton County, Missouri, and her father died

there in 1840.

SAMUEL and POLLY (BOWMAN) PRIESTLEY went to Missouri two times, and they

returned to Lincoln County in 1847 or 1848, when SAMUEL built a log house on

what is known as the "Priestley Farm" - the house burned in 1878.

SAMUEL died in 1870, in Rome (Priestley), WV, at almost 81 years of age. Either

he, or his son George Baxter Priestley, requested to be buried alone on a

hilltop on Priestley Ridge, and, today is resting there, as he asked, with

unmarked stones at head and foot.

POLLY was living with her son GEORGE BAXTER and AMANDA PRIESTLEY's family when

the 1870 census was taken, and she was 67 years old, then. After the fire,

GEORGE BAXTER built a small house for the family to live in while the main house

was being built; the small one later served as the kitchen and dining room.

GEORGE reared his ten children from his marriages to AMANDA STEPHENS and AMANDA

HILL, in this house. The house was then acquired by his son, WILBURN CHAPMAN

PRIESTLEY, SR., and his wife, EDITH ISABEL (MCCLURE) PRIESTLEY, who reared their

children there.

ISABELLA HAZLETT: b. 12 Nov 1792, in Rockbridge Co., VA; m. 1810, Kanawha Co.,

(W) VA -first w/o Samuel Priestley; 10 children; d. 13 Feb 1831.

ISABELLA HAZLETT was born on November 12, 1792, in Rockbridge County, Virginia.

ISABELLA married SAMUEL PRIESTLEY in 1810, in Kanawha County, (W) VA, Rev. John

Lee, a Baptist preacher, officiating. She could have come from Rockbridge County

to Kanawha County with him, since he also came from there, ca. 1810.

They had 10 children:

1) SAMUEL PRIESTLEY, JR., (b. 1811);

2) WILLIAM (4) PRIESTLEY (b. 1814; 25 Oct 1836, in Kanawha Co., m. Elizabeth

GRIFFITH; lived in MO);

3) JAMES QUINN PRIESTLEY (b. 11 May 1816, d. 17 July 1904; m. Mary Frances

CLEVELAND);

4) JOHN PRIESTLEY (b. 27 Sept 1819; m. Lizzie (---), w. Kansas farmer); 5)

BETSY ELIZABETH, "LUCY" (b. 1817; 2 Apr 1835 in Kanawha Co., m. Solomon PAULEY);

6) SALLY PRIESTLEY (m. 20 Oct 1833 in Kanawha Co. to Ralph Tolier BOWMAN);

7) MARTHA ELLEN (b. 20 July 1821);

8) ISABELLA PRIESTLEY (b. 11 June 1828; d. 8 Aug 1898, in Henry, MO; m1 A.

GLOVER, m2 James CARLETON);

9) HANNA PRIESTLEY (b. 1810-1831); and

10) JANE PRIESTLEY (b. 29 Aug 1824, d. 20 Feb 1905, in Hillsdale, Kansas; m.

Jacob Cathey).

ISABELLA died on February 13, 1831, at the age of 38. On August 21, 1831, SAMUEL

remarried to MARY "POLLY" BOWMAN. ISABELLA probably died and was buried in

Lincoln County, WV, either at the Priestley Family Cemetery on Priestley Ridge,

or in the Hazlett Cemetery at Sod. However, she might have died out of state.

=========

MARY POLLY BOWMAN was the daughter of MARSHALL and BEHETHLAND

(JOPLING) BOWMAN, born in Rome, Kanawha Co., (W) VA, on August 7, 1802 (*or

1792, by microfiche record); m. 21 Aug 1831, in Kanawha Co., to SAMUEL PRIESTLEY

(2nd wife) - 5 children.

Mary Polly Bowman's parents had moved from Amherst County, VA, where they

were married on May 19, 1794, to Kanawha Co., (W) Virginia. Polly might have

been living in Henrico Co., VA, for the 1810 Census, when her father was listed

in Kanawha County. She was in Kanawha Co. before the 1820 census.

For the 1820 KANAWHA COUNTY CENSUS, Marshall ("Martial") is listed with 5

boys (possibly his four sons Lusby, Tobina, Lindsay, Zack, and one other?) and

one girl (16- 26 years old), who was Polly's age (18), and there was a woman

over the age of 45, probably Behethland.

Marshall Bowman was an early settler on the Big Coal River, in Kanawha

County, (West) Virginia. He had a patent for 153 Acres on Coal River, dated

August 28, 1805, in Kanawha County. Marshall's Land Grant in Kanawha Co., (W)

VA, of 1833, was for 153 acres on the W. side of the Coal River (Bk. 2, p. 357).

John Bowman also had a land grant in 1833, which was for 100 acres adjacent to

Marshall Bowman's on the Coal River (Bk. 2, p. 263).

MARY "POLLY" BOWMAN was about 29, when she became the second wife of SAMUEL

PRIESTLEY, on August 21, 1831, in Kanawha County. Born in Rockbridge County,

Virginia, he had moved to the area in 1810, when he married ISABELLA HAZLETT.

They had ten children before she died in February of 1831.

POLLY and SAMUEL had five children: ROXANNA PRIESTLEY (b. 1832, in

Kanawha/ Lincoln Co., WV; d. Boone Co., WV; m. Rev. Aaron Jack GRIFFITH);

MARSHALL B. PRIESTLEY, SR. (b. 24 Dec 1833, in Priestley, WV; d. 18 May, 1915,

at Alum Ck., WV; m4); DANIEL M. PRIESTLEY (b. 1835, in Lincoln Co., WV; d. 1917,

in Lincoln Co., WV; m. 4 Jan1858, to Martha Ellen BOWMAN); GEORGE BAXTER

PRIESTLEY (b. 28 Nov 1839, in Benton Co., MO; d. 20 March 1883, in Priestley,

WV; m1 12 Dec 1861, in Charleston, WV, to Amanda STEPHENS, m2 ca. 1875-78, to

Amanda HILL); and ZACHARIAH B.PRIESTLEY (b. 28 Nov 1843, in Benton Co., MO; d.

11 Nov 1933, in Hillsdale,Kansas (Miami Co.), m. 3 Jan 1866, in Charleston, WV,

to Margaret Mariah KING).

SAMUEL PRIESTLEY died on March 1, 1870, at almost 81 years old; POLLY was

67, then. POLLY is listed as living with son GEORGE BAXTER and AMANDA (STEPHENS)

PRIESTLEY, in the 1870 Census, but Betty Young Montgomery's history says she

died 6 days after Samuel, on March 7, 1870, in Rome, West Virginia.

Samuel was buried on Priestley Ridge in the family cemetery. Polly

might have been buried there, too, but it is not known at this time- Samuel had

stones to mark his grave, and there are no names or dates on them. Polly might

also have unmarked stones.

WILLIAM PRIESTLEY, JR.: Probably English; s/o William Sr. & Mary (--) Priestley;

m. Sarah Beach (d/o William - d. pre- 1786), on 3 Oct 1786, in Rockbridge Co.,

VA, by James McConnell; Presbyterian ("Forks of James"/Hall's Meeting- house/

Old Monmouth Pres. Church?); 2 children +?; DEED- Rockbridge Co., VA, Apr 4,

1809; 1778 and 1782 TAX LISTS FOR ROCKBRIDGE CO.; moved from Rockbridge to ? ca.

1809; d. where?

WILLIAM PRIESTLEY, JR., was born ca. 1760's, one of five children of WILLIAM and

MARY (----) Priestley. He had one brother, JAMES PRIESTLEY (b. 1760), and three

sisters: ELINOR, NANCY and ELIZABETH, "BETSY," PRIESTLEY (m. 7 Sept 1790, in

Rockbridge Co., to William SKEEN (Sr)).

A few years after the American Revolution, on October 3, 1786, William

Priestley, Jr., married SARAH BEACH, the daughter of WILLIAM and (--) BEACH, of

Rockbridge County, Virginia. They were married in Rockbridge County , by James

McConnell, a Presbyterian minister.

Two children were born to William Jr. and Sarah in Rockbridge County:

1) WILLIAM III, b. ca. 1786-1793; and

2) SAMUEL (b. 20 Apr 1789; m1 in 1810 to ISABELLA HAZLETT, in Kanawha County,

(W) VA; m2 on 21 Aug 1831, to MARY "POLLY" BOWMAN, daughter of MARSHALL BOWMAN,

in Kanawha County, (W) VA; d. 1 Mar 1870, in Lincoln County, WV).

The Priestley family resided in Rockbridge County, Virginia, from at least 1778

to 1809, at which time William Jr. , his wife Sarah and son William Priestley

III (and mother Mary?), appear to have moved from the area to place(s) unknown

at this time (westward?). Their son Samuel Priestley left Rockbridge County for

Kanawha (later became Lincoln) County, (W) Virginia, by 1810.

Jonathan and Eleanor (Priestley) Skeen moved to Jessamine Co., KY, before

1798-1799, when Jonathan died. Eleanor and their children later moved to Ripley

and Jefferson Co., IN. She died in Ripley Co., IN, in 1822.

On April 4, 1809, William Priestley, Jr., sold land on Buffalo Creek to his

brother-in-law, William Skeen (Sr), husband of "Betsy." (Rockbridge County, VA,

Deeds).

The Rockbridge County, Virginia Tax List for 1778:

William Priestley, Sr., with 2 (people) and William Priestley, Jr., with 1

(person).

Four years later, the 1782 Tax List:

William Priestley with 2 (People) Titheable because they were not Episcopal, and

had 4 horses and 12 cows. *See in O. F. Morton's "HISTORY OF ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY,

VA."

In "THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE ROCKBRIDGE HISTORICAL SOCIETY," Vol. 3,

pp. 40- 45, article, "MONMOUTH CHURCH," A Condensation of the Address of

Rev. C. A. McDonald, of July 26, 1948: " A subscription paper dated

November, 1787, shows efforts of the people of Hall's Meeting- house to

have Mr. Graham devote one-half of his ministerial services to them. In

1789, the congregation renewed their call, which he then accepted. For

sake of convenience, the congregation was divided, one part worshipping

at Hall's Meeting- house, and the other half at Lexington. Hall's

Meeting- house had in the meantime built a stone church, the partial

ruins of which yet remain. This pastoral relation continued till Mr.

Graham resigned his rectorship of Liberty Hall Academy, September 25,

1796. ... Supply ministers were sent, after Mr. Graham's resignation,

until 1798, when the service of Rev. George A. Baxter, for one-half his

time. He had studied in collegiate courses and in theology under Rev.

Mr. Graham, and had graduated at Liberty Hall Academy not long before

this; and after his graduation, had been licensed to preach at New

Monmouth in 1797. The following names were signed to the agreement, or

subscriptions to his salary;...William Presley,...William Skeen,... Mr.

Baxter accepted the call May 1, 1799. The other half of his time was

devoted to Lexington congregation. .. Pastoral relations with Rev. Mr.

Baxter continued till October, 1821, when he resigned at New Monmouth to

devote his whole time to Lexington, that church having obtained separate

organization in 1819", pp. 41 & 42.

The William Presley who (in 1797 or 1798) signed "the agreement or

subscription to his (Rev. George Baxter's) salary," was probably William

Priestley. Jr., but could have been his father, William Priestley, Sr.

(d. ca. 1800, in Rockbridge Co.) It is possible that James Priestley,

William Jr.'s brother, was the same James Priestley who was taken into

the home of Rev. William Graham as a boy, to insure him a proper

education. James was a graduate of Liberty Hall Academy of 1785, it's

first graduating class (although it was started in 1776 and James could

have "graduated" anytime between then and 1785). (From "ROCKBRIDGE

HISTORICAL SOCIETY PROCEEDINGS," Vol. IX, pp. 49-50, article on the

first graduating class, with much about James).

William Skeen, who also signed the agreement , is probably the same

as William Jr.'s brother-in-law, "Betsy's" husband. There is a William

Skeen, who died in 1829, buried in the Old Monmouth Presbyterian Church

Cemetery. He has an unmarked grave in Square #5 , near Samuel Skeen (d.

1826) and James Skeen (d. 1831), who are possibly William and "Betsy's"

sons Samuel and James. "Betsy" is not buried there under the name Betsy

Skeen, but she might have remarried, moved, or been buried elsewhere

(with her parents?). Place where William Priestley, Sr., was buried is

unknown at this time, but he died in Rockbridge County around 1800. It

seems that he would have been buried in one of the Presbyterian Church

Cemeteries, but has not been discovered, yet. Maybe they had a family

cemetery on their farm and he was buried there.

Samuel Priestley, who left Rockbridge County around 1810 for Kanawha

County, (W) Virginia, named his son, born in Benton County, Missouri, on

November 28, 1839, GEORGE BAXTER PRIESTLEY. It is likely that he was

named for Rev. George A. Baxter - Samuel probably knew him well as his

pastor at New Monmouth/ Hall's Meeting- House between 1797 to the time

Samuel left, in 1810 - about 13 years. Samuel, born on April 20, 1789,

in Rockbridge County, would have been 8-years-old, when Rev. George

Baxter became their minister, so Samuel grew up to the age of about 21

with Rev. Baxter probably a close friend of the family.

SARAH BEACH: d/o William and (--) Beach;m. William Priestley, Jr.; 2 children+?;

Presbyterian; Deed - Rockbridge Co., VA, Apr 4, 1809: her share of 196 Acres on

Buffalo Ck. to William Skeen.

SARAH BEACH was the daughter of WILLIAM and (---) BEACH. She was born ca.

1760's (Harrison County, (W) Viirginia?). In the Rockbridge County, Virginia,

Marriages book, her father is listed as William, deceased at the time of her

marriage on October 3, 1786. (Also found name "Waldron" Beach in one record

as her father.)

Sarah married WILLIAM PRIESTLEY, JR., the son of WILLIAM SR. and MARY (---)

PRIESTLEY, of Rockbridge County, Virginia. At least two children were born to

them: WILLIAM PRIESTLEY III and SAMUEL PRIESTLEY (b. 20 April 1789, in

Rockbridge Co., VA; m1 in 1810, to Isabella Hazlett, in Kanawha Co. (W) VA; m2

to Mary "Polly" Bowman, in Kanawha Co., (W)VA, on August 21, 1831; d. 1 March

1870, in Lincoln County, West Virginia).

Sarah and William Jr., their son William Priestley III (and possibly William

Jr.'s mother, Mary Priestley), left Rockbridge County around 1809. Where they

moved from there is unknown to me at this time.

WILLIAM PRIESTLEY, SR.: b. ca. 1726-1740, possibly in England; m. Bef. 1758, to

PRIESTLEY NAME DEFINITION

As early as 1327, the name PRIESTLEY existed in the form of "PRESTLEGH," in

Somerset county, England. A man named Walter was called by that name, which was

the combination of two Old English words describing where he lived. "WALTER OF

PREOST-LEAH," meant the Walter who lived in the priest's meadow, or, perhaps, in

the clearing or wood by the Church. Somerset county is in southern England, on

the Bristol Channel. Later in the 1300's, there were also Priestleys much

farther north, in West Riding, North Yorkshire county. In 1379, Elena and

Johannes "de Presteley" lived in Hipperholme, near Bradford.

The West Riding, North Yorkshire area in England, (particularly the towns of

Bradford and Leeds), appear to be where our Priestley ancestors might have

resided before coming to America in the 1600's or 1700's. This area, as well as

the counties of Lincolnshire and Derbyshire, which are just south of Yorkshire

in north-central England, became regions distinctive of the Priestleys.

------------------

-----------------

It is most likely that WILLIAM PRIESTLEY (also recorded as "Pressly" and

"Presley"), was born either in England, or in the American colonies. We only

know that he was probably born before 1740 (because it is most likely that he

was no younger than 18 when his daughter Eleanor was born in 1758), and that he

lived with his wife, Mary and six children in Augusta/ Rockbridge County,

Virginia, from at least 1760, when James was born, until his death sometime

before April 1, 1800.

If not born in England, William may have been a descendant of several early

American Priestley families who had come here by ship. At least nine Priestleys

came To Virginia, between 1622-1705, by ship.

If William Priestley, Sr., were born in England, ca. 1726-1740, then he would

have come by ship to America sometime after 1726. There were some Priestleys who

arrived by ship during 1720-1760, which I will add in the future.

-----------------

SIX CHILDREN OF WILLIAM SR. and MARY PRIESTLEY (b. ca. 1758-1781):

1) ELINOR/ELEANOR: b. Abt. 1758; m. Jonathan SKEEN, in Rockbridge Co., VA, on

June 12, 1780, and migrated to Jessamine Co., KY, ca. 1798; died 1822, in

Jefferson Co., IN;

2) NANCY (AGNES): b. Abt. 1759; (Nickname "Agnes"?- Agnes m. John MOORE, in

Rockbridge Co., VA, on Nov. 19, 1781 and later moved to Jessamine Co., KY)

3) JAMES: b. 1760, in Augusta Co., VA; m. in Mercer Co., KY, in 1788, to Sarah

MCBRIDE- 6 children; d. Feb 6, 1821, in Nashville, TN;

4) WILLIAM JR. (b. Abt. 1763; m. 3 Oct 1786, in Rockbridge Co., VA, to Sarah

BEACH); d. Aft. 1809;

5) MARY PRIESTLEY (b. Abt. 1770; m. 24 Jan 1788, in Rockbridge Co., VA, to

John DORRIS/DAVIES);

6) ELIZABETH, "BETSY": b. Abt. 1772; m. 7 Sept 1790, by William Graham, in

Rockbridge Co., VA, to William SKEEN, Sr.;

The William Priestley, Sr. family were Presbyterian. The Presbyterian churches

in their area of Rockbridge Co., VA at that time were "Forks of James," Hall's

Meeting- house, Old Monmouth Presbyterian Church.

The Priestleys were Presbyterians, most likely members of Hall's Meeting-

house/ Monmouth Church. William Jr. and Elizabeth "Betsy" (Priestley) Skeen's

marriages were performed by Rev. James McConnell (on 3 Oct 1786) and Rev.

William Graham (on 7 Sept 1790), respectively.

In the PROCEEDINGS OF THE ROCKBRIDGE HISTORICAL SOCIETY, Vol. 3, pp. 40 -45, the

article, "Monmouth Church: A Condensation of the Address of Rev. C. A. McDonald,

on July 26, 1948," tells some of the history of Hall's Meeting- house and names

William Presley and William Skeen as members whose signatures were on an

agreement in 1798. The article explains that Rev. Graham had been the preacher

for the united congregations of Timber Ridge and Hall's Meeting-house from 1776

to 1785. After being gone for about four years, in 1789, he accepted the

request by the people of Hall's Meeting- house to return and devote half of his

ministerial services to them. continued with until resigning on September 25,

1796. In 1798, William "Presley" (Priestley) and William Skeen's signatures were

among those who agreed to subscriptions to the salary of Rev. George Baxter,

who would spend one half of his time serving them. He accepted and started on

May 1, 1799, continuing until October 1821, when he resigned at New Monmouth to

devote his time to the Lexington congregation.

William Priestley, Jr.'s marriage to Sarah Beach, by Rev. James McConnell

(Presbyterian), would have been during the four years that Rev. Graham was not

minister at Hall's Meeting-house, and "Betsy" Priestley's marriage to William

Skeen, performed by Rev. William Graham in 1790, would have been after his

return in 1789. William Jr. and Sarah's son, Samuel Priestley, would have had

Rev. George Baxter as his minister from about age 10 to age 20, when he left the

area. Thirty years later, on November 28, 1839, in Benton County, Missouri,

Samuel named his son George Baxter Priestley.

The Priestleys were farmers in an area southwest of Lexington, Virginia.

Lexington was still a very small town, when it became the county seat of

Rockbridge Co., in 1778.

Rockbridge County was formed in 1778, and two William Priestleys are in the 1778

TAX LIST FOR ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY:

1) William Priestley, Sr., with 2 people; and

2) William Priestley, Jr., with 1person.

Then, four years later, the 1782 TAX LIST only has one William Priestley with 2

people (Titheable because they were not Episcopal), with 4 horses and 12 cows.

(History of Rockbridge County, Virginia, by O. F. Morton).

* No idea whether this is William Sr. or Jr. Perhaps one was gone in military

service (during the Am. Revolution) at that time. William Jr. had not married,

yet, and was probably in his early 20's. William Sr. was married and probably

in his forties. James Priestley was not listed in either Tax List - living with

Rev. Graham from the time he was about 14 (ca. 1774).

1776-1783 THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION: It is possible that William Priestley, Sr.,

served in the American Revolution, but there is no evidence of his service,

yet. Sigfus Olafson and Leonard Priestley's report of their research of

military records said that evidence suggests that William Priestley served in

the Revolutionary War for seven years. I think they meant William Sr. but am not

sure.

The Priestleys were Presbyterians, living in Rockbridge Co., VA, during the

American Revolution. They had lived in that area for at least sixteen years

before that, from at least 1760, when son James was born in Augusta County. They

remained there after the Revolution, until about 1809, when it appears that

Mary, the widow of William Sr., and William Jr.'s family left the area.

TWO ROCKBRIDGE CO., VA. DEEDS on April 12, 1779:

1) Deed to "William Pristly/Pressly" of the Forks of James River and county

of Rockbridge, from the executors of estate of William Hall: Andrew Hall and

George Berry - for 115 acres of land at Todd Springs Run, on Buffalo Creek,

Forks of James River, in Rockbridge Co., VA, for a sum of (first part

unreadable- "seventy, thirty, twenty ?") - two pounds current money of

Virginia".. (Deed Bk A, pp. 137 & 138).

Buffalo Creek was the largest creek in the county. This land is in William

Priestley, Sr.'s Will, and was passed on from his heirs, in Deed of April 4,

1809, to William Skeen, husband of William Sr.'s daughter, "Betsy" Priestley.

(The deed was for 196 acres instead of 115, for some reason). It might still be

in the Skeen family, I don't know how many times it has changed hands since

then;

and

2) Deed for a lot in the town of Lexington, VA, executed by the trustees of

the town, conveys lot #5 to William Presley. (This never appears in the tax

records, according to Sigfus Olafson/ Leonard Priestley's 1945 summary).

Notes for Samuel B. Priestley:

Samuel Priestly was listed as a veteran of the War of 1812 under John Wilson's Co., from Kanawha County. His service was from 09-13-1814 to 12-16-1814.

Land grant 1810 Virginia for 100 acres on Fuquay's Creek, Kanawha Co., VA later Lincoln Co.

He deeded 50 acres to Andrew Pauley in April 1812. On 10-08-1813 he deeded another 50 acres to Richard Parsons. Thirty pounds was price for each sale. 02-25-1816, Parsons deeded back 50 acres for $150. He lived there with Isabella until he

sold it to Solomon Pauley 10-18-1836. He asked to be buried on what is known as the Priestly farm on a hilltop on Priestly Ridge in an unmarked grave.

Notes

Dyers index of Land Grants shows that in the year 1810 the State of Virginia granted him 100 acres of land on Fuqua's Creek in Kanawha County. The records in the Court House in Charleston, West Virginia show that Samuel Priestley married Isabel Hazlett in the year 1810, but the month and day is not known. Rev. John Lee, a pioneer Baptist Minister performed the ceremony. Letter from Sigfus Olafson dated May 18, 1941 says Isabella Harlott (I will verify this with the Kanawha County Courthouse records).

Served in Captain John Wilson's Company, from Kanawha County. In service in 1812 as a private. The West Virginia Heritage Encyclopedia Volume nine supplemental series page 182.

Samuel and Polly went to Missouri twice before 1848 when he built the house called Priestley farm.

From Priesley Family chronology:

April 20, 1789 - BIRTH OF SAMUEL PRIESTLEY, to William Jr. and Sarah (Beach)

Priestley, in Rockbridge Co., Virginia.

1809 - PRIESTLEYS LEAVE ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY, VA

Around this time, many members of the Priestley family moved from Rockbridge

county, VA, to place(s) unknown. Samuel went to Kanawha county, (West)

Virginia. Samuel's grandmother, Mary Priestley, his parents, William Jr. and Sarah

Priestley, and his brother, William III, left the area, apparently.

Elizabeth "Betsy" (Priestley) Skeen and her husband, William, were deeded the

196 acres on Buffalo Creek, and probably stayed in Rockbridge county until their

deaths.

1809 - KANAWHA CO., (W) VA - SAMUEL PRIESTLEY LAND GRANT: 100

Priestley, to WILLIAM SKEEN, SR., husband of Elizabeth, "Betsy," Priestley (sister

of William Jr.). (Rockbridge Co., VA, Deed Bk. (?), pp. 443 & 444). This is the same

115 acres that was purchased on April 12, 1779 by William Priestley, Sr., and was

left to his son, William Jr., and two grandsons, William III and Samuel Priestley, in

his will.

Samuel Priestley had already left Rockbridge county and was probably in

Kanawha county, (West) Virginia, at this time. On May 17, an identical deed to

William Skeen for Samuel's rights to the land from his grandfather's will was

recorded. The deed was finally delivered to the grantee on December 21st, 1812.

Virginia, to WILLIAM SKEEN (identical to April 4, 1809 deed for 196 acres from

his brother, William III, and their parents to William Skeen). This was because the

land had also been willed to Samuel from his grandfather, William Sr.

1811- James Priestley, Sr., bought 226 acres along the Chamberland River , from Andrew Jackson, for $3,000. Called the house built there Montebello. The current location of Grand Old Opryland. (from Family Treemaker WFT CD Vol. 4, #0540).

October 8, 1813 - KANAWHA CO., (W) VA DEED for 50 acres from Samuel and

February 25, 1816 - KANAWHA CO., (W) VA DEED for 50 acres of land on Forks of

Fuqua's Creek for $150.00 from Richard Parsons back to Samuel Priestley. He and

18, 1836.

Isabella died and he remarried to Mary Polly Bowman on August 21, 1831, in
