81. Brothers in Deed to Brothers in Need, Clarence Hiebert, Page 411, The passenger list for the Lessing that I found has our Thiessen's spelled as Kiessen. I am confident these are our Thiessen's as Mennonite archives say that they arrived on the "Lessing". "Lessing" sailed from Hamburg to Havre to New York. Arrived in NY 5 July 1883. The passenger manifest lists the following individuals (Note: I have corrected the Kiessen misspelling): Name Sex Birthdate Age Occupation/notes Thiessen, Peter M 12 July 1854 29 workman Catharina F 12 July 1852 31 wife Catharina F 7 July 1875 8 child Anna F 6 July 1876 7 child John M 6 July 1877 6 child Dietrich M 6 July 1878 5 child Petrus M 5 July 1881 2 child Heinrich M 5 July 1883 6m infant Note that Catharina(Tina), Anna, John, and Dietrich are Klaassen's. I assume that they were all listed as Thiessen for simplicity. Also note that Peter F. was listed as Petrus. This illustrates how the German Mennonites were already being pressured by the Russian government to use the Russian language. This suggests that perhaps these children knew a little of the Russian language. I do not know why the birthdates are listed the way they are.
82. "A Family's Mennonite History ", Volume I, 2nd Edition, by Kenneth L. Ratzlaff, Page 164, "Katharina re-married two years later to Peter Thiessen. She bore four more children in the Kuban. In July, 1884, the Thiessen family emigrated to America. They purchased a quarter-section farm for $1,440 in Durham Park Township of Marion Co., north of Waldeck, Kansas, a now-extinct railroad village that had been located northwest of Lehigh, Kansas. Additional information has not yet been located except that Katharina died in Corn, Oklahoma, in 1915."
