Notes for H
ARRIET BELCHER:
Harriet Belcher Grider became a widow when her husband Wm Henry Grider was killed during the Civil War. She was left with six daughters and one son to raise. The Grider Farm was adjacent to the Belcher property, and when Harriet's father, John Belcher, died in 1864, the Belcher property was divided equally between John Belcher's eight children. Harriet managed to buy several of the sections of property from her brothers and sisters, and combined the Belcher property and the Grider property.

This combined Belcher/Grider property on Meshack Creek has never been sold and is today the property of Harriet Belcher Griders descendants. The "Homeplace" on Meshack Creek has been granted Kentucky State Historical Farm Status and is one of the items featured in the book "Historic Farms of K
Kentucky."

Notes for W
ILLIAM "HENRY" GRIDER:
William Henry Grider Civil War Service:
Company A, 37th Kentucky Mounted Infantry Regiment
Captain: Isaac A. Chinoweth

William Henry Grider enlisted in the Union Army, Company A, 37th KY Mounted Inf Reg, and fell in battle at Glasgow, KY in 1863. He was buried in a common grave along with other casualities of the battlefield. After the war, his family paid to have his body located and brought back to Monroe County, Ky to be re-buried. The agents commissioned to locate and return his body reported to the widow Harriet Grider that his body was lost off the wagon in transit, and was never recovered again. It is possible that the family was victomized by unscrupulous people who preyed on the families of fallen soldiers.
