William Thinnes was a chronic alcoholic. According to Roy and [William] Richard, the two oldest sons, he was also abusive to his wife and children.
When they were old enough to go to work they forced their father to leave the home and took on the task of helping their mother provide for their younger siblings. He never returned to his family.

Due to her husband's alcoholism, Edith Thinnes was forced to go to work to support her family of seven sons. According to her second son William Richard, she worked cleaning houses for wealthy families.
