Source: Fairmont Sentinel, Tues 13 Aug 1918 Date of newspaper article is unknown) Fairmont newspaper called "__________" FAIRMONT'S FIRST WAR HERO IS LAYED AWAY Walter Thiemann Buried Sunday With Military Honors. One of the most beautiful, balmy days of the spring season, when it seemed that the whole world must be happy; was marred by a tinge of sadness In Fairmont, Sunday, when Martin county citizens turned out en-masse to do honor to the earthly remains of the first boy from this county to make the supreme sacrifice for liberty in the world war.One by one, the bodies of these brave boys are coming back to the home land to remind us that the world was not made safe for democracy without great cost. We speak of America as the greatest, grandest nation on the earth.True, but why is she so?Surely there must be a reason why that country conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal, should have risen from a vast wilderness, inhabited by wild savages who roamed about it's broad plains with no other end in view than a piece of venison for dinner or a piece of birch-bark for a new canoe, should to day be recognized as the land of freedom for oppressed.Yes, there is a reason, and the biggest reason is that she has always had just such men as Walter Thieman who have been ready to rise for the protection of the principles for which she stands in the time of need. Millions volunteered with him in; the fight for democracy, every one of them prepared to die for the Stare and Stripes, if need be.Some came, back maimed, others came back unscratched; Walter was one of those who was called upon to give all. Eighty-three members of Lee C. Prentice Post, under the command of Commander Moore, were out in uniform to do last honor to their fallen comrade. The services were held at the National Guard armory under the auspices of the Legion at 1:30 o'clock. The building was filled to capacity with hundreds standing outside the door.Reverend Bunge, of Pleasant Prairie, delivered the sermon injuent and eloquent language, paying high tribute to the fallen. The Fairmont City Band led the procession to the cemetery, where the remains were laid to rest in the last long sleep. Immediately following the group of soldiers, with Henry Kramer carrying the colors, and C. S. Donnelly and Claude Swanson as guards, came the hearse carrying the body, accompanied on either side by a guard of uni-(continued on page 4) |
