Dear Mr. Thiemann,
My name is Carl Smith, and I just came across a file that you had posted at Roots Web which mentions an Abijah Smith and Susannah Wilkinson of Charlton, NY. I believe (if your information is correct) that your Abijah is the son of my GGGGgrandfather Isaac Smith (b:Jan. 15, 1743) and his wife Hannah Rockwell (b:Aug. 11, 1738). I have Isaac's bible, and he lists the birth of a son, Abijah, on Mar. 10, 1770. I know from church records in the town of Charlton, that Abijah had a wife named Susannah, and that a daughter named Saphronia was born to them on either Feb. 5,1807 or Sept. 24, 1807. Abijah is also listed as a town Pathmaster in 1801.
Other than a mention in Isaac's will, as a beneficiary, that is all I have had on Abijah for years. Could you please tell me the source of your information? Do you have Abijah's bible? If you like, I can e-mail you the scanned page of Isaac's bible which lists the birth of Abijah. And I would be more than willing to share any information that I have on Isaac and Hannah and their ancestry with you, if you are interested.
Thank you very much. Carl Smith [eccehomo@nycap.rr.com]

Hi Roger,

I second your statement that this is very exciting. Especially since I have been looking for anything on Abijah at all for about two years, and then to get an entire descendant report in one letter that was written in 1899. Cool stuff!

You may be able to zoom in on the bible page that I sent you if you have a program on your computer that allows you to toy with and zoom in on photos and scanned images. I know it's hard to read, but I had to do something other than keep pulling out the original when people wanted to see it. It's in a safe now, and I don't even touch it. It is a very good image, though, and I have been able to look at it very clearly with a program on my computer called Adobe Photo Shop (business edition). That's not an advertisement. There's probably several programs just as good that you could download for free off the net that would do the same thing.

With that said, I also figured that you might be interested in what Abijah's 3 brothers were up to at about the same time. So, I have inserted the first three generations of descendants of Isaac Sr. and Hannah here. This also might help you figure out who some of the other people on that bible page are. This bible was published in 1809 and was the property of Isaac's eldest son, Zadock. Isaac may have spent his final years living with Zadock, and that would explain why Zadock took the time to enter the birth dates of his brothers and sisters and some of their children. All of these people lived in Charlton at the time within a few miles of one another. If you can get a map of the town of Charlton, Elias' home was on the southwest corner of what is now Division St. and NY Rte. 67, Capt Isaac Jr.'s home was on the southwest corner of what is now Cook Rd. and NY Rte. 67, and Zadock's home was on the north west corner of Division St. and Eastern Ave. That is where my family lives now. I am the sixth generation to have grown up on that farm. We also have Zadock's original deed for the land, dated 1796.

The very faded writing is Zadock's. The darker is the hand of his son, David Atherton. You can see the first thing he records is his father's death. Here are the names and dates recorded in the first column.

Isaac Smith was born January 15, 1743

Hannah Smith was born August 1741 (I'll explain this later, but take the time to look at how all the other dates are recorded compared to this one, and remember that the bible wasn't published until 1809)

Zadock Smith born November 11, 1764
Elias Smith was born January 16, 1766
Isaac Smith was born June 29, 1768
Abijah Smith was born March 10, 1770
Polly Smith was born July 11, 1772
Ruth Smith was born December 7, 1775
Hannah Rockwell was born January 5, 1774 (Zadock married his first cousin)

The second column follows:

Ruth Smith died November 21, 1793 aged 17 years 11 months
Hannah Smith died November 27, 1793 aged 51 years and 3 months (This is Isaac Sr.'s wife)
Isaac Smith died September 30, 1824 aged 81 years 8 months and 15 days
Zadock Smith died March 8, 1850 in his 86th year
Hannah Smith died October 20, 1853 in her 80th year (This is Zadock's wife)
Almira Smith died January 6, 1850 in her 41st year
