Eliakim WARDELL (b. 1634, d. Abt. 1680)
Notes for Eliakim WARDELL:
Eliakim and Lydia were both heroic figures in the annals of
early Quaker History.
Their experience was central to the history of Quaker
persecution in New England, and being recorded, shows us what
persecution was like as it affected Huguenots, Antinomians and
others early on.
See Lydia notes for the rest.
"Eliakim was elected Sheriff of Monmouth County in 1683 and
invited by the Dutch to serve as Schepens (magistrate)at Fort
William Henry in 1673.George Fox, on a visit to Shrewsbury
mentioned the construction of a meeting house going on at the
time of his visit in 1672.This meeting house predated William
Penn's experiment by a number of years and was there 25 years
before the Flushing meetingon Long Island, the first in New
York."
After being banished from the colony. The couple went to Rhode
Island then to Shrewbury NJ.They were the first purchaser of a
patent for Quakers at what is now Monmouth Beach in 1664.
The Wardells became martyrs to the Quaker cause. They both
became community leaders organizing the Quaker migration to New
Jersey.
