1. BETTY "BESS"¹ (LAFORCE) was born ca 1730 in ????, and died in ????.

Notes for BETTY "BESS" (LAFORCE):
Betty or "Bess" is listed as one of 13 slaves captured in the Shawnee Indian raid at Martin's Station, KY in June of 1780. The 13 slaves were the property of Mrs. Agnes Moseby La Force, widow of Rene La Force. The La Force family, a French Hugenot family originally from Goochland Co., VA had migrated into
the western portion of Virginia that later became Woodford Co., KY following the death of Rene La Force.
While in Goochland Co., VA the La Force family were neighbors to the famed Randolph family of Virgina.

Betty is believed to be the mother of 7 of the slaves, with a daughter named Hannah listed among the slaves. After their capture, Betty, the other twelve (12) slaves and the other members of the Agnes La Force family were taken to Detroit, MI and eventually into Canada (West) for distribution among the Shawnee and their Indian agents who were British Loyalist.

Betty, along with her grand-children Grace, Rachel, and Patrick were kept by the Shawnee. The other children were dispersed among the Loyalist as follows: Scippio---Simon Girty, Ishmael--Philip Le Duc, Stephen--Capt. Duncan Graham, Kijah "Keggy"--Capt. Matthew Elliott, Joseph--Capt. Matthew Elliott, Job--Mr. Duperon Baby (pronounced Baw-be), Hannah-Mr. Frederick Fisher and Kandis (Candis)-Capt. Alex McKee.

In 1812-1813 the La Force family petitioned the British government for the return of their slaves. The documentation describing the pettiton may be found in the Woodford County Court (Book F, pp 187-188 and 311 which lists the names of the slaves.

When the La Force family petitioned (1812-1813) for the return of their slaves captured in the Martin's Station raid in June 1780 it was stated that Scipio had been taken by Simon Girty, a white Pennsylvanian
wo sided with the British and led many Indian raids against the Americans.

Futher research required for Vital Records on Scipio. For continuity we have assumed the surname of
La Force for all of the slaves captured in this raid.

JAMES/TIM (LAFORCE), b. ????; d. ????.

Notes for JAMES/TIM (LAFORCE):
When the La Force family petitioned (1812-1813) for the return of their slaves captured in the Martin's Station raid in June 1780 it was stated that James/Tim had been taken by Mr. Philip Le Duc, a French Canadian member of the raiding party led by Capts. Bird and McKee.

Futher research required for Vital Records on James/Tim. For continuity we have assumed the surname of La Force for all of the slaves captured in this raid.

When the La Force family petitioned (1812-1813) for the return of their slaves captured in the Martin's Station raid in June 1780 it was stated that Ishmael had been taken by Mr. Philip Le Duc, a French Canadian member of the raiding party led by Capts. Bird and McKee.

Futher research required for Vital Records on Ishmael. For continuity we have assumed the surname of
La Force for all of the slaves captured in this raid.

STEPHEN (LAFORCE).

Notes for STEPHEN (LAFORCE):
When the La Force family petitioned (1812-1813) for the return of their slaves captured in the Martin's Station raid in June 1780 it was stated that Stephen had been taken by Capt. Duncan Graham, an officer and agent in the British Indian Department.

Futher research required for Vital Records on Stephen. For continuity we have assumed the surname of
La Force for all of the slaves captured in this raid.
