Notes for Luke B. Smith:
Captain Luke B. Smith trained students at Prince Edward Academy, Virginia. For many weeks he was head of his company at Petersburg and Williamsburg, Virginia, during the American Revolution.
In 1758 Luke Smith and wife, "Judah", of North Carolina sold several tracts of land in Halifax Co., Virginia, to Jacob Ferris, John East, James Ferris, and Joseph Farris.
On August 1, 1760, Luke obtained a Lord Granville Grant to which he signed his own name--222 acres on the fork of Brush Creek, which would be in present Chatham or Randolph Counties.
Prince Edward Academy, in 1783, became Hampden-Sydney College. It is in Prince Edward County, Virginia, about seven miles from Farmville.Organized in 1775 by the Hanover Presbytery, Hampden-Sydney owes its origins to Christian patriotism. The College was open to all, "of whatever religious name, with no plan to disturb the preferences which custom or conscience favored." 1
Among the chief promoters of Prince Edward Academy in 1775 were the Scotch-Irish presbyterians.
