MR FRANCIS STILES.
1. "Mr." Francis1 Stiles, the third son of the Milbroke Family, was baptized in St. Michael's Church. Milbroke, Bedfordshire, England, August 1, 1602, (see page 17), and for some time previous to his coming to America, had been a master carpenter and citizen of London. Though the third, in order of birth, of the four emigrant Stiles brothers, he was by far the most enterprising and energetic in character, and it was through his influence and means, undoubtedly, (as more fully related in pages 23 to 28 of this volume), that the family removed hither.

NI50316] Francis Stiles was one of the first freemen of CT, 1640. He was carpenter in London, like his brother Henry, and immigrated on the ship "Christian," departing in March, 1635, with brothers Henry, John and Thomas. He stopped first at Dorchester, but removed to CT early, settling at Windsor. Savage believes that Rachel, age 28, was his wife, but there were two wives and two children on the ship with the 4 brothers and he belives it difficult to assign spouses and offspring. The Stiles Genealogy calls Rachel wife of Francis' brother, John, which is confirmed by her name mentioned in John's will. It identifies Joan, the 35 year old passenger aboard the "Christian," as wife of Francis. It appears that Francis likely married twice, Sarah being the name of the wife that survived him to marry Robert Clarke.
According to Cutter's "CT Families," Vol. III, pg. 1455, Francis was manager of a party sent by Sir Richard Saltonstall to make a settlement on the Connecticut River. He is called in The Stiles Genealogy the most enterprising and energetic of the brothers and that it was through his means and influence that the family removed to New England.
He was admitted Freeman at Windsor 10 Sept. 1640. He was active in local affairs and involved in several lawsuits there. He removed to Saybrook, CT, perhaps about 1647, and to Stratford by March, 1654, althouth it's not known whether he ever actually lived in the latter.
