Generation No. 1

      1. David1 Thompson was born 1774 in Ireland, and died 1859 in Adams Township, New Concord, Guernsey County, Ohio. He married Sarah Gordon. She was born 1780 in Ireland, and died 1847 in Adams Township, Cambridge, Guernsey County, Ohio.

Notes for David Thompson:

"David Thompson and Sarah Gordon, an Irish lad and lass were born in the old country -- he in 1774 and she in 1780. Six years after their wedding feast they began an eighteen years residence in Allegheny (sic) County, Pa. The vicinity of New Concord, Muskingum County [Ohio] then became their abiding place until 1817 when their final settlement was made in Adams township. In 1847 she passed away and in 1859 he joined the "great majority." Their children are: Jane, Sarah, David Glenn and Andrew..."

"The Household Guide and Instructor... and a brief outline of the History of Guernsey County, Ohio" published in Cleveland by T.F. Williams 1882. The excerpt I quoted was from this typescript pages 7
and 8 on Adams Township. While I got this about 20 years ago, and did not write down where I copied it, I am fairly certain that I saw it at the Ohio State Library in downtown Columbus, Ohio. "

"The direct descendant for our family in America was David Thompson, a weaver by trade, who lived in the north of Ireland and who had the misfortune to be ruined by the potato famine in the early 1800's. In 1814 he embarked in a small boat for America with his wife and seven children, his wife being pregnant with the eighth. Although the War of 1812 was not over and the frontier was wild, he finally located in the wilderness in northwest Ohio, where he cleared the land and finally worked a farm. The hardships of this voyage and deprivations of this experience were demonstrated to me when I visited the original David Thompson farm. he had preserved a small strip of virgin land, which had been untouched since he occupied the surrounding land. It illustrated the original character of the wilderness at the time of his arrival. It was almost impassable with trees, vines, shrubs growing in the wild state. It was impressive to think that this family survived and cleared the land, making it into a fruitful farm."
