I have traced my family tree back to my 4th great grandfather, John Thorburn who was a blacksmith and lived at Cairnfield, a small farm near Kirkinner, Wigtownshire, Scotland. John married Agnes Stewart Duff in 1806 at Old Cumnock, Ayr, they had 2 sons, William b 1807 and John b 1809. Agnes died in 1810 and John remarried to Margaret McAvoy about 1812, they had 3 children, James b 1813, David b 1815 and Margaret b 1818. James is my 3rd great grandfather, he was a stonemason and around 1837/38 worked on the Isle of Man with his brother David and half brothers William and John. Whilst on the Isle of Man James met Margaret Callin which resulted in the birth of William Henry Thorburn, my 2nd great grandfather. Unfortunately James fled the Isle of Man without marrying Magaret so William Henry was an illegitimate child. James went back to Scotland and settled in Port William, Wigtownshire where he married Janet McColm and they had 9 children. A daughter of James and Janet named Susan married George Lamond, if you have any connection with the Lamond family please visit Fred Lamond's Family Tree Maker home page for further information.William Henry lived on the Isle of Man until 1869 when he married Eliza Kinnish, shortly after their marriage they moved to Chelsea, London, they had 3 sons, William b 1871, Frederick b 1872 and James b 1873. Fredrick is my great grandfather , he was a watchmaker and moved to Cambridge around 1900 where he married Anne Legge. Frederick and Anne had 6 sons, my family have now lived in or around Cambridge for almost 100 years. If you are researching a Thorburn family I would be delighted to hear from you with a view to exchanging information which may be of mutual benefit.
