Obituary for Walter Sanford “Sandy” Dale

Walter Sanford “Sandy” Dale, 94, passed away in Bozeman, Mont., May 31, 2001. He was born Nov. 26, 1906, in Scarville, Iowa, to Samuel A. and Ragna K. (Myre) Dale. He married Irene Rohrer in Bismarck, N.D., on July 29, 1939. He attended Business College and worked in numerous banks for 14 years. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in Washington, D.C., and then aboard various ships. His last ship duty was aboard the USS Implicit (minesweeper). While anchored in Russian waters, he did guard duty at the Yalta Conference and was lucky enough to have his picture taken with Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Following the war, Sandy owned and operated Coast-to-Coast stores in Harlem, Mont., and in Bozeman, where he also did electrical contracting.

He was an avid golfer and played in the Montana State Senior Golf Tournament for 25 years. He also loved to hunt, fish, bowl and play bridge.

He was a past commander of the V.F.W. in Harlem and a member of Hope Lutheran Church in Bozeman, the Bozeman Elks Lodge, Masonic Lodge and Albedoo Shrine.

Sandy is survived by his wife, Irene, and daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and James Lockie, all of Bozeman, and numerous nieces and nephews from Canada to California.

Memorial Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 4, 2001 at Hope Lutheran Church. Should friends desire, memorials in Sandy’s name may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children, P.O. Box 2472, Spokane, WA 99210; to Hope Lutheran Church, 210 S. Grand Ave. Bozeman, 59715; or to Gallatin Hospice, c/o Bozeman Deaconess Foundation for Gifting, 931 Highland Blvd. Suite 3200, Bozeman 59715.
