Leila played basketball for the Zanesfield girls team in the 1934-35 season. In a game against West Mansfield reported on page 3 of the Saturday, February 16, 1935, issue of The Daily Examiner published in Bellefontaine, Ohio, she scored 19 of the 27 team points in a 27 to 29 loss. Her name appears in several reports of the 1935 Logan county girls tournament in The Daily Examiner. On page 3 of the Monday, February 25, 1935, issue of The Daily Examiner, is a report of a first round tournament game. Zanesfield beat Bellecenter 23 to 21. Leila scored 15 of the 23 points on five field goals and five free throws. The tournament win avenged a 31 to 21 loss to Bellecenter in league play. The Tuesday, February 26, 1935, issue of the same paper had an article on page 8 entitled "Clingerman And Wearly Are Top" referring to the fact that Leila was the leading scorer in the girls tournament to that point and that Phillp Wearly of West Liberty was the leading scorer in the boys tournament. Unfortunately, the tournament trail came to an end as reported on page 8 of the March 4, 1935, issue of The Daily Examiner. In the semi-final game, Zanesfield lost to West Liberty by a score of 19 to 7. Leila scored five points in that game on one field goal and three free throws. Finally, her name appears in the Wednesday, March 6, 1935, issue of The Daily Examiner in an article summarizing scoring during the tournament. That article reports that she scored 20 points in the tournament, tied for third among the leading scorers of the tournament.
We had a basketball net in the backyard at our home. From time to time, my mother would shoot baskets with me and sometimes with members of Bob and Ila Yoder's family as they often came to our house on Sundays in summer to spend the day. She shot the ball overhand from behind her head. It was something of a precursor to the modern day jump shot. She was a good shot and made a large percentage of her shots from more than 15 feet. I do recall her once talking about her tournament play in high school. Because of the way she shot, her shot was difficult to block. Specifically, she mentioned that the West Liberty team that defeated them in the tournament had a particularly tall girl who guarded her and was capable to blocking or limiting her shots.
I have a picture of the 1934-35 Zanesfield team with names of the coach and team members written on the back of the picture. I have a similar picture of the 1933-34 Zanesfield team.
After they were married, my parents lived for a while in an apartment on the second floor of Bob and Ila Yoder's home and store on North Main Street at Rush Avenue in Bellefontaine. They also lived in Zanesfield near the post office. On page 9, of the Wednesday, May 15, 1940 issue of The Daily Examiner published in Bellefontaine, Ohio, there was an article about activities in Zanesfield. A portion of that article reports that: "Darrell Thompson of Urbana and Mr. and Mrs. B. D. Thompson, and son Larry of Bellefontaine, spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Paul Thompson."
Rev. Ted Bailey, pastor of the Zanesfield Methodist Church, conducted her funeral services. Byron Stuart, Norman Rex, Ken Clingerman, Glen Moore, Cledus Scott, and Philip Moots served as pallbearers.
