 Includes NotesNotes for Horatio Clingerman:
From the 1860 Federal Census of Ohio, Horatio and Lucy were living in Jackson Township in Union County of Ohio. Horatio is listed as 26 years old and Lucy as 20 years old. S. E. and Miriam Williams are listed one family away in the census records. Miriam was Lucy's sister, and her husband was a physician.

In the 1880 Federal Census of Ohio, Horatio and Lucy were living in Jefferson Township, Logan County Ohio. The members of the household were Horatio, age 45, Lucy, age 42, William, age 15, Franklin, age 13, Harry, age 10, and Charles age 8. Horatio's father is recorded as born in Pennsylvania, while his mother is listed as being born in Virginia. The census lists both of Lucy's parents as born in Ohio, but that information conflicts with other information about their birth places.

Page 21 of the 1890 Atlas of Logan County shows a plat map of Jefferson Township. Horatio Clingerman is shown owning a tract of land in Military Survey number 2674, northeast of Zanesfield. The land is on the south side of what is now known as county road 2. The farm is in what is now commonly known as the Hadley Bottom. However, as noted below, Jan Geeslin reports the area to be known as None Such Valley.

In the 1910 Federal Census of Ohio, Horatio and Lucy were living in Jefferson Township, Logan County, Ohio. The household listed next by the census taker was that of their son John F. Clingerman, his wife Avis, and children Leon, Mary, Leona, Ila, James, and Mabel.

According to The Clingerman Family History by Jan Geeslin, Horatio was brought to the southeastern part of Logan County as a young boy. It was there he received his education. The early part of his life was devoted to the harness making trade. It is believed that John and Horatio operated an inn in Zanesfield which also doubled as an Underground Railroad Station during the Civil War. After he married Lucy, they operated an inn, hotel, and livery stable in Zanesfield. Later, they purchased a farm at the head of None Such Valley, north and east of Zanesfield. A few years prior to his death, Horatio became a semi-invalid which was not considered a serious condition until the last two days of his life when he developed bowel trouble.

According to Wilbur Henry Siebert in The Mysteries of Ohio's Underground Railroads (1951, p. 149), there were three stops on the underground railroad in the Zanesfield area. One stop was five miles east of Bellefontaine and two north of Zanesfield. He lists the families of Brown, Elliot, Harmon, Hodlys, and McAtiers as abolitionists in the area. There is no mention of John or Horatio, but the stop locations are consistent with their locations at the time of the Civil War.
