Notes for James Riley Cole: In the 1850 Federal Census, James R. Cole is show at age 14 living in the household of James Cole, age 66, in Paris Township, Union County, Ohio. Including James R., there were 10 persons living in the household on the date of the 1850 census.
The 1860 Federal Census shows Riley Cole at age 24 living in Dover Township, Union County, Ohio. Other member of the household were his wife Christina at age 21, and his daughter Mary at age 1. The next household in the census record was that of Noa (Noah) and Margaret Trout who were Christina's parents. Christina's brother, Abraham, was also living with Noah and Margaret at the time.
Guardianship for James, Abraham, Mary Jane, and Margaret Alice Cole was granted to Philander Cole by James R Smith, Probate Judge in Union County, Ohio on February 11, 1870 according to documents included in the pension application of Christina Cole from the National Archives. Copies of the records are in the possession of the writer.
According to the History of Union County, Ohio (Beers, 1883, p. 485), James Riley Cole served in Company F of the Sixty Sixth Ohio Infantry. James was mustered in on March 29, 1964 and died at Nashville, Tennessee on July 8, 1964. "Company F suffered most severely in the battle of Port Republic, having nine killed, twelve wounded and four taken prisoners, and during its term of service, forty-one died on the field and in the hospitals, thirty-four were wounded, and eight taken prisoners."
