Notes for Silas Brookins: The will of Silas Brookins was recorded on July 10, 1841 at 6 o'clock afternoon. The will is recorded in the Shoreham Vermont land records book, book 9. Mark Diehl has produced a transcription of the will which is available on the internet. The writer has a copy of the will as recorded in the land records books of Shoreham and a copy of the transcription of the will produced by Mark Diehl. The will was signed by Sally Thomas, widow to the said deceased, Jesse Thomas, Phillip C. Brookins, Asa Rathbun, Johannah Rathbun, James Downey agent for Silas Brookins, Lucy Downey, and Samuel Robinson guardian to Almon Brookins and Liana Brookins. Phillip C. Brookins, Silas Brookins, Jonathan Pierce Brookins, and Almon Brookins are mentioned in the will as sons of Silas. Joanna wife of Asa Rathbun, Lucy, wife of James Downey, and Liana Brookins are mentioned in the will as daughters of Silas.
According to Rev. Johiah F. Goodhue in the History of the Town of Shoreham Vermont, 1761 to 1861 (1861, p. 32), Silas Brookins settled in the Shoreham area in about 1788. At the time of the writing of the book, Thurmon Brookins, grandson of Silas, lived on the place originally settled by Silas.
According to Carleton E. Fisher and Sue G. Fisher, compilers of Soldiers, Sailors, and Patriots of the Revolutionary War Vermont (1992, p. 73), Silas served as a sargent in Captain Hurlbut's company. They list Lucy as his wife. Their record show him dying in Shoreham in 1832. However, other sources show his date of death as 1822.
