Notes for John Haas: According to the Backenstoss--Baggenstoss Family History (1993) edited by Elwood Bruce Backensto, John Haas and Elizabeth Bagenstoss moved to New Jerusalem, Ohio in 1839. According to the History of Logan County and Ohio published by O. L. Baskin and Company in 1880 (p. 757), John came from Berks County, Pennsylvania, in 1839 with his family and settled at New Jerusalem in Jefferson Township of Logan County, Ohio. John Haas had purchased 42 acres of land there.
The name, New Jerusalem, apparently comes from a settlement in Berks County, Pennsylvania. A Goggle search for New Jerusalem on the internet yielded two locations called New Jerusalem. One was in Logan County, Ohio, and the other was in Berks County, Pennsylvania. Pages 739 through 772 of The History of Logan County and Ohio published by O. L. Baskins and Company of Chicago in 1880 contains biographies of persons living in Jefferson Township, Logan County, Ohio. Several families listed there came from Berks County, Pennsylvania. Among the settlers were William Arbegast, who married Sarah Hass, daughter of John Haas, Joel Arbegast, Daniel Arbegast, Thomas Dickinson, William Moon, and Jacob Slonecker.
