Notes for Johannes Bagenstos: On page 18 of the Backenstoss--Baggenstoss Family History edited by Elwood Bruce Backensto and published in 1993, there is a reference to information from the History of Berks County, PA, compiled by Morton L. Montgomery in 1909 and published by J. H. Beers and Co. of Chicago. The complete text describing Johannes Backenstoss, as it appears in the Backensto history, is provided below. "He was born on the homstead farm in Centre Twp., and lived near Garfield P. O. all of his life, engaged in blacksmithing and farming ... he and his family were members of Belleman's Union Church, belonging to the Lutheran congregation, m. to Elizabeth Himmelberger, and they had these ch.: John, who d. young; Jacob; Samuel; Jonah(Jonathan); Rebecca; Kate; John(2); Sallie; William and Benneville."
The actual text of from page 855 of Volume II of the Historical and Biographical Annals of Berks County Pennsylvania, compiled by Morton L. Montgomery and published by J. H. Beers & Co. of Chicago in 1909 is provided below:
"John Bagenstose, the grandfather of Jacob, was born on the homestead farm in Centre township, and lived near Garfield P. O. all of his life, engaged in blacksmithing and farming. He was the owner of two properties, consisting of 130 and 160 acres respectively, and was a substantial and influential citizen. Mr. Bagenstose and his family were members of Belleman's Union Church, belonging to the Lutheran congregation. He was married to Elizabeth Himmelberger, and they had these children: John, who d. young; Jacob; Samuel; Jonah(Jonathan); Rebecca; Kate; John(2); Sallie; William and Benneville."
As can be seen by comparing the two citations, the Backenstoss-Baggenstoss Family History omitted some interesting and useful information in citing the Montgomery publication. All of the above text was part of the biographical sketch of Jacob Bagenstose, the grandson of John Bagenstose.
