Notes for Rev. Samuel Palmer:
Rev. Samuel Palmer was the minister of a church of an independent religion in Hackney, London, England. He married Elizabeth Walker. They had several children, Samuel, John, Ebenezer, Elizabeth and Sarah. Rev. Samuel had set aside a piece of his property as a cemetery beside his church in Hackney. Many of the earlier Palmers are buried therein. After his death in the early 1810's his parishioners compiled several of his sermons into a book. a copy of these is still on hand in an Archives in London.

The following is a quotation from a letter addressed to the Daily Gleaner, Fredericton N.B. from Mrs. Irvine Van Horne, Bloomfield Ridge, N.B. It was copied from a book "In Their Very Own Words" produced by Central N.B. Woodsmen's Museum Inc.

" People along the Miramichi River , especially fishermen and guides are interested in the names of fishing pools and places and many a story has been told of how a certain pool or campsite got it's name.
One well known spot is the "Palmer Place", about 3 miles above Hayes Bar on the right bank of the Miramichi. A place where many canoe men launch and beach their boats when making river trips.
When passing by the Harvey Studio in Fredericton, you will see a photo (abt. 1895) of the Palmer Family, who gave the place its name. One of the first pioneer families in the area.
In the front row are 2 sons and 2 daughters of Rev. Samuel Palmer, of London, England. Who embarked to Canada May 5, 1833 with his family, landing in Newcastle, N.B. They proceeded up the Miramichi River, which then was the only way of transportation, as there were no roads. They settled on what is now know as the Palmer Place.
My Great-Grandmother (Sarah) told me that she was twelve years old when she came out, the next sister( Mary) was 5, it was her birthday when they left England. 5th of May. I don't know how long they were on the ocean. They used to tell us stories when we were children, about when they came across from England, over in the old sailing boats they had then, and how they came up here & lived, and built themselves a cabin. Boys! I'm telling you, it was interesting for us. I often wished we'd had some way of recording those stories. When Irving had a warden job at the head of the settlement, we used to go and stay with him quite alot. And in the evenings we used to go out fishing. He had a rod & I'd just stand around & daydream. Look around here and there & wonder just ehere their cabin sat & where they got their water. Someone told me there was still a well, but I never looked around, I was always too afraid of snakes!
