This book lists Capt. Thomas J. Thompson as residing on Kent Island, Queen
Anne County since1850, when as a child of ten (born 1841), he accompanied
his parents from Dorchester County. Lists his father's death as 1869.
After his father's death, he married Mary A. Baxter and had seven children:
Charles Annie, Carrie, Thomas, Kirby, Howard and Cecelia.

The 1880 census states that Thomas J. Thompson lives next door to Alexander
Thompson. Although it is circumstantial evidence at best, one may
reasonably come to the assumption that they may be brothers.

The 1880 census lists the Alexander Thompson as follows:

Alexander Thompson      white      male      46 yrs      oysterman      can read/can write
Julia A.                   white      female      40 yrs      keeps house

Dorsey B.            white      male      1 yr      at home

The 1870 census lists the Alexander Thompson as follows:

Alexander Thompson      white      male      37 yrs      carpenter
Julia A.                   white      female      30 yrs      keeps house
William W.            white      male      7 yrs

James C.            white      male      2 yrs
Drucilla                  white      female      3 1/2 yrs

The 1860 census first mentions John Thompson (father), Alexander Thompson
and Thomas Thompson (sons) in the same household.

John Thompson            white       male      68 yrs      farmer
      Catherine            white      female      49 yrs
Alexander            white      male      25 yrs      sailor
      Thomas                  white      male      16 yrs
      Richard                  white      male      13 yrs
George Trott            white      male      12 yrs
      (Lives next to Holten Legg)

The Dorchester County records indicate that John Thompson married Catherine
Troth July 3, 1834

Several links occur within these records that bind them together. In 1834
John Thompson married Catherine Troth in Dorchester County. Census records
show that Trott Family members lived in the Queen Anne County household of
John and Catherine Thompson (George Trott, age 12 yrs in 1860). Census
records also show that Trott Family members lived in the Queen Anne County
household of Alexander and Julia Thompson (Benjamin Trott, a sailor aged 72
yrs). The listing of Thomas and Alexander as John Thompson's sons in the
1860 census and the note that Thomas J. Thompson (39 yrs) lives next to
Alexander Thompson (46 yrs) in the 1880 census ties them together. The
math is off by three years for the Thomas J. Thompson listed in the book,
Portrait & Biographical Record of the Eastern Shore of Maryland, to be the
Thomas J. Thompson of the census records. In the book he was cited as
being born circa 1841, in the census records he would have been born circa
1844.

Two data indicate that John Thompson emigrated from Dorchester County.
First is the Dorchester County marriage record of John Thompson and
Catherine Troth in 1834, supported by Trott Family members listed in the
Thompson households. Second is the record of Thomas J. Thompson in the
book Portrait & Biographical Record of the Eastern Shore of Maryland.

It is also interesting to note that the 1860 census lists a 20 yr old
daughter of Holten Legg, Julia, and that they live next to Alexander
Thompson, aged 25 yrs. The 1880 census lists Julia A. (aged 40 yrs) as the
wife of Alexander Thompson (aged 46 yrs). Methodist Church records state
that Alexander Thompson and Julianna Legg were married on August 25, 1862.
It is reasonable to deduce that Alexander married "the girl next door".

Adelaide Coleman Thompson remembers Alexander Thompson as "Uncle Alec" who
lived with Ida T
