Descendants of Samuel James Coleman

Generation No. 1

1. SAMUEL JAMES1 COLEMAN was born in Farm near Tolchester, Kent County, Maryland, and died July 10, 1867 in Kent County, Maryland. He married (1) ANN REBECCA COLEMAN March 06, 1827 in Rev. Ayers, Kent County. He married (2) MARYETTA HYNSON May 13, 1854 in Rev Massey, Kent County, Maryland.

Notes for S
AMUEL JAMES COLEMAN:
The Index of Marriage Licenses of Kent County, Maryland located in the Courthouse in Chestertown, Maryland lists a marriage licence for Samuel James Coleman and Ann Rebecca Coleman, March 06, 1827, married by Rev. Ayers. It is unknown if Ann's maiden name was Coleman or if she was named Coleman from a previous marriage to another Coleman. A second marriage is listed for Samuel James Coleman to Maryetta Hynson of Kent County, May 13, 1854 by Rev. Massey. A grave exists at the Hynson Chapel on Baker's Lane and Ricaud's Branch Road and Lankford Road for George Coleman, age 28 yrs, died January 15th, 1867. The data for the first marriage is consistent with records left by his great-granddaughter, Myrtle Coleman. She also mentioned that it was believed that Samuel James Coleman remarried after the death of Ann. There are also five other Kent County, Maryland marriages listed for people by the name of Samuel Coleman for the approximate period of his life, making genealogical research difficult and confusing. They are:

Coleman, Samuel Kent Co. to Sarah Ann Tull Kent Co, June 11, 1822, Rev. Ayers

Coleman, Samuel Kent Co. to Eliz. Fray Kent Co, Aug. 9, 1831, Rev. Thomas Smith

Coleman, Samuel Kent Co. to Mary M. Crouch Kent Co, Oct. 25, 1847, Rev. Williams

Coleman, Samuel Kent Co. to Susan T.Ashley Kent Co, Sept 21, 1854, Rev. Massey

There is no will registered for Samuel James Coleman at the Kent County Courthouse in Chestertown, Maryland. However, there is a record of the inventory and disposition of his estate. Noteworthy is the lack of real estate in the records, indicating that although he was obviously a farmer by trade he may not have owned the land he farmed or the land was dispositioned seperately from his possessions. However, there are two land transactions listed in the projected life span of Samuel James Coleman. On August 8, 1851 a Samuel J. Coleman purchased an approximate 34 acre tract of land from the Crane Family called Hynson's Chance on Piney Neck for the sum of $275.00 (Recorded in Deed Book 1849 JR#1, Kent County Courthouse, Chestertown, Md). It is interesting to note that Samuel James Coleman's second wife's maiden name was Hynson, who he married three years after the land transaction. On May 30 1855 a Samuel J. Coleman purchased an approximate 4 acre tract of land from George W. Hynson on Langford's Neck near Chestertown for the sum of $48.62 (Kent County Land Record 1854/1855 JFG2, Kent County Courthouse, Chestertown, Md.). In these records there is no mention of a wife of Samuel J. Coleman who married in 1827; however, the records do specify the wives of the sellers of the lands. If the wife was listed it would resolve the uncertainty as to the question if the records are for Samuel James Coleman, father of James Wesley Coleman. the Hyland family of Kent Co, which they also resided in the Rock Hall, Edesville area.

An inventory for the estate of James Hyland, Jr., appraised 11 Aug. 1824 by Francis Lamb, Admin. of estate, was sold and concluded 28 Mar. 1826. Hesekiah Coleman and also William Coleman purchased articles from James Hyland, Jr.'s estate.

The record of the inventory and disposition of Samuel J. Coleman's estate is that of Samuel James Coleman, father of James Wesley Coleman as one of the receivers of the property was a Wesley Coleman. These records give us an insight of Samuel James Coleman's life. It is clear that he was a farmer, growing corn and wheat and maintained sufficient livestock for his family's needs (cows, pigs, sheep). The records also give us hints of who his relatives and neighbors may have been. All of his estate was inventoried and sold. The majority of the household furnishings were purchased by Mary E. Coleman; Wesley Coleman purchased two corn crops in the field, farming equipment and a bed, stove pot and oven; Alfred E. Coleman purchased household items, a horse and a cultivator; William P. Francis purchased the majority of the livestock; and, Joseph R. Apsley (James Wesley Coleman's father-in-law) purchased farming equipment. It is reasonable that Mary E. Coleman and Alfred L. Coleman are close family members to Samuel James Coleman, perhaps children or his brother and sister. Additional documentation is needed to resolve the relationships. The inventory and disposition of James Samuel Coleman's estate is listed below.

From James M. Chase 1999:
The outlaw Thomas Coleman "Cole" Younger was named for my gr gr grandfather, Coleman Younger, son of Charles Younger, b.1782
Hampshire Co, Va., son of Joshua Logan Younger, b. 1752, birthplace unsure. Most family genealogists believe that Joshua in turn was the son of John Younger & Sarah Kennard of Kent Co, Md. This is because Kennard Younger, b.c.1755 & Joshua lived near one another throughtout their lives. Joshua enlisted in the Rev War from Frederick Co, Va, Kennard from Frederick Co., Md. Both received land in Ky for their service, and lived in the same general area--not surprising since this is where early land grants were. Both died in Indiana at advanced ages, having spent their last years with married daughters. The fact is that they never were in the same county at the same time. the Kennard name is not found among Joshua's many children & there is no history of communicqation between them. John younger was the son of Humphrey Younger, b.1677 in Kent Co. His father, thomas, came over from Scotland. Cole Younger wrote the governor of Mo. from prison that his father had a genealogy of the family on the wall of his house, which was burned down during the Civil War. It traced the family back over 200 years to the Eatern Shore of Md., and thence to the ancestral home in Strassurg on the Rhine. Joshua's 2nd wife was German, and his son Charles had a letter from Germany at the Liberty, Mo post office. This convinces me that the John-Humphrey lineis wrong. My grandmother showed Joshua as the son of Lewis. A Lewis was a naturalized German of an age to have been Joshua's father. There are records of him in Western Md in the 1760s. One genealogist shows him dying in Kent Co in 1776. I still suspect that the coleman name was that of either a collateral surname, or that of a close friend.

From Dick Coleman 1999:
So far as I know, my Charles is the earliest Coleman documented without
interuption from 1763 forward. BIG problem is that he and family of of eight
kids and wife Eliz. Yearly Coleman moved to PA about 1810-right after an
older Charles Coleman died--connection unknown. Charles was in Eastern Neck 7th Company of the Kent Co. Militia for the Revolutionary War. But we can't connect him with the Caulks Field Colemans. (He beat it out of there in the nick of time??)

From Melinda M. Zupon
Some Coleman information is from Mary Anne Coleman's relative in Chestertown.
Isaiah Coleman and Araminta Stevens (Nov. 24, 1796- ?) were married on Oct.
27, 1818. Her parents were Jacob Stevens and Sarah Brice. They had:
(Isaiah Coleman is listed as a Private in Captain Chamber's Company 21st Regiment in the War of 1812 for Kent County. It could be father or son.)
William W. born circa 1819 and married Martha Ann Hynson on June 6, 1849 andhe died Sept. 14, 1899.

James. I have found James' middle name listed as Ulysses or Urier. I don't
know which is right. He was born August 17, 1819 or 1822. He married Susan
and Mary had:

Mary Ann who was born April 30, 1843 and married Richard Grant on November
25, 1858. My line is from Mary Ann. I have tried to find out more about
her and her Coleman family for years. I went to Kent County 2 times looking
for her grave at Wesley Chapel.

Isaiah was born Feb. 17, 1844. He married Susanna Dobson on Sept. 21, 1865.

James William was born Oct. 13, 1846. He married Anna Sappington and Joanna Dikerson. He died January 19, 1908

Martha born c. 1848.

Araminta was born Oct. 13, 1850. She married Wallace Maslin on Dec. 16,
1867. She died Oct. 8, 1915.

William H. was born Feb. 17, 1851 (which is wrong because it is only 4
months since Araminta was born). He married Elizabeth Warner on June 20,
1872.

William Bowers was born Feb. 17, 1855. He married Annie Erdman on Feb. 8,
