Ira Rawson Stevens (son of Asahel B. Stevens and Lucretia Rawson) was born 08 Apr 1839 in Sandy Creek, Oswego, NY, and died 27 Oct 1916 in Galesburg, Knox, Il.He married Hannah Sofia Woolsey on 23 Mar 1865 in Knoxville, Knox, Il, daughter of Wright Woolsey and Rebecca Yeager.
Notes for Ira Rawson Stevens:Cameto Peoria Co. IL 1864. Was a contractor and built houses and other
buildings in Galesburg such as Knox College.He was in Civil War in 1861. Was in the24th
Regiment Iron Brigade.Army of the Potomac, NY.Served 2 years.As as he was viewing a telephone pole being installed the telephone pole slipped andfell and Ira was struck and killed.A $10,000 settlement was divided between the four daughters. He was a member of the GAR Post 45.
Those who knew him ie. my Aunt Louise says he was a real gentleman.And really
a very nice person.He lived at 74 W. North St. also on Cherry Street in
Galesburg in houses he himself built. He and Hannah were buried in Linwood Cem. on W. Main St. and Linwood.Going in the main gate, themonument is 5 gravel roads on the Left side.
He and Hannah had 4 daughters and my Aunt Louise said he hired a dressmaker every seasonto come to the house and make dresses for his wife and daughters.
His 2nd wife was Cordelia Slade Smith and they had a pre-nuptial contract.
