In Nov 1828, Sarah and Mary, while on their way to Pettis Twp, Pike co, Il encountered a violent storm on Lake Erie.The compass was out of order, they drifted on Long Point bar on the Canadian shore where the vessel, a sailing craft, was pounded to pieces.The waves swept over all, the two wives and the infant son Ephraim Pelton by Sarah were drowned.The two brothers were saved.They were on their way to join Maj. Stephen Pettis, father of Sarah and Mary, who had settled previously at Pettis Twp, Pike, Co, IL.
