ANDREW'S PARENTS
Holloways are known to have been in Tennessee as long as records have been kept there, at least as early as the 1790's. Most were from VA or NC as far as can be determined and they lived in the only settled areas, the original Jefferson county in the northeast and Davidson, which then comprised the north central Curnberland River loop.
TWO major Holloway lines were established there before 1820. The first was founded by William and his sister Obedience, who with other members of their family came to Tennessee from Granville Co., NC. This was one of the early group of counties formed when North and South Carolina were separated. This area was named for the Earl to whom the area had been given by the King of England. It was along the north central border of the state, in what now is the Raleigh-
Durham area. Parts of Orange County were taken from it in 1752. Wake Co. was erected from Orange in 1771. They came to TN before 1810 and lived for a while in the Roane County area, just west of what is now Knoxville, then went to Marion County when it was opened legally to whites after the natives were removed. Several of their land grants date from 5 July 1824, the official first day of the county.
Obedience had married Green Hill Pryor, whose names were from two maternal lines. They maintained homes in both Roane and Marion Counties, and he was buried in the former. They had 14 children. William had married Mary Ann Bradley (Polly) from VA in early 1820. They had 11 children. Their daughter Nancy married Jeremiah Holloway, identified only as a cousin. He must then have been a son of a brother of William. Charles, Edward, and, John are possible candidates that were
on Marion land grant lists along with William, but are otherwise not identified. Jeremiah and Nancy also had 1 1 children, so Marion county was plentifullv supplied with Holloways and related families.
About that same time a Samuel Holloway came to Tennessee from orange CO., NC. He was the son of Samuel and grandson of Bermillion. The father of Bermillion was Thomas, born in Goochiand VA about 1747, and who brought his family to Orange Co., NS in the 1770's, Samuel was in Rhea Co., TN before 1819, and lived there long enough to fattier eight children, then they made their way to Putnam Co. in the central part of the state, where they spent the rest of their lives. One of the sons was named Andrew Jackson, born in 1836, and he was for a long time the primary candidate for the husband of Margaret Tharp, His wife was Sarah, however, and they lived in Putnam Co. in 1870.
The subject of our immediate interest is a third family descended from another Andrew Jackson Holloway, b. about 1837, who m. Margaret (Pagey) Tharp, first seen in the 1850 census of Marion Co., TN as the daughter of John and Rebecca (Hilliard) Tharp. There is no firm evidence as to the parents of Margaret's husband. The most promising candidate is found in the 1850 census of Wilkes Co., NC, where Hampton Holloway had a son listed there as Jackson, age 13. He is shown elsewhere to be named Andrew Jackson. Hampton had a brother also named Andrew.J, who in later life also used only Jackson, presumably to avoid confusion with his son and two nephews bearing that name. General and President Andrew Jackson was a very popular person in his home state.
Hampton was the son of Stephen, born in Orange Co., NC, whose father John and his brother James came to Wilkes about 1790. John was the son of Stephen, born
about 1732 in VA, and brought to orange Co. by his father Robert, born about 1710 in VA, and died 1778 in Orange Co. Three Holloway men appear in the Orange Co. records in the 1770-85 era, Thomas, Robert, and Bermillion. There are some who think that they are sons of a Vermillion of Goochiand, but there is no reasonable supporting evidence for this proposal. However, the similarity if the names of the children and the persistent NC/VA history suggest that all three of the families discussed here could have a common origin.
Neither Hampton nor Jackson is seen again in NC records after 1850. A family
memoir says that Hampton is thought to have died in Iowa, without any hard proof. However, some of the brothers of his wife are known to have taken their families there. Most of the rest of this clan can be accounted for, at least until 1870, the magic date for Andrew and Maargaret. TWO men believed to be cousins of Jackson were in Madison and Lincoln Cos. TN with Andrew. The others mostly are seen in later NC census listing and WFT trees.
The attached listing of census data is intended to help in sorting out the puzzle of any possible connection between Andrew and Jackson. it is arranged more or less chronologically by state,, to assist in seeing the movements of the families. One encouraging fact that can be seen by comparing the census page numbers of the different families in a given county and year is that many of these persons lived very near each other at various times, and especially in Marion during 1840-60. See, for example pages 226-8 of the Marion census for 1860. We do not know whether accident or family ties brought them together. Any corrections or additions to this listing would be appreciated.

      Holloway Families
This is a summary of the data gathered while trying to trace all of the Holloway families in selected counties of Tennessee, GA, MO, AR, and North Carolina in the period of roughly 1790 to 1910, while searching for the parents of the Andrew J. who married Margaret/Peggy Tharp, and was the father of Rebecca, who married Benjamin Cook in Independence Co., AR in 1881. All nine spellings of Holloway, and all four of Tharp are consolidated. Notes
are added occasionally for clarification, but generally data are from census records and published documents. Assumed ancestral lines are indicated by boldface.
