Notes for J
OHN STREITENBERGER:
"Passenger Arrivals at the Port of Baltimore 1820-1834" by Michael H. Tepper, from customs passenger lists transcribed by Elizabeth P. Bentley (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1982), page 618, lists the following group arriving at Baltimore, Maryland on an unnamed vessel in the last quarter (October 1-December 31) of 1832:
Shauterberger, Barbara, age 40 years, female
            Michael, 5, male
            Monica, 2, female

The same work, page 619, also lists the following group arriving at Baltimore in the same quarter as in the above paragraph:
Sheeterberger, Joh., age 32 years, male, shoemaker
            Joh., 7, male

Even though the passenger list transcriber, Elizabeth P. Bentley, misread their names and listed them as Barbara "Shauterberger" and John "Sheeterberger", the above emigrants are UNDOUBTEDLY the Streitenbergers from Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany, my second great grandfather, Michael; his sister, Monica; his brother John; and his parents, Barbara and John (or perhaps Johanne or Johannes). Barbara's, Michael's, Monica's, and John's (the child's) ages, as I have researched them, all agree with those listed on the passenger list.

The younger John (or Johannes) listed above may have been John M. Streitenberger, born April 3, 1825, even though John M. Streitenberger's living descendants state without a doubt that John M. was the son of Peter and Barbara Streitenberger (see the notes under John M. Streitenberger from Harold W. Streitenberger). It appears to be unlikely that John M. was the son of John Peter and Barbara Hanzelmann Streitenberger since the Maryland Historical Society and the Baltimore, Maryland Federal and City Passenger Lists from Bremen, Germany, arriving May 31, 1847, lists John Peter and Barbara Hanzelmann Streitenberger arriving on the Barque Virginia with sons Johannes, age 31, and Adam, age 28. "Adam" was definitely John Adam Streitenberger, husband of Margaretha Schaefer. "Johannes", at age 31, would have been born about 1816, but John M. was born in 1825. One possible explanation is that in addition to the John Peter and Barbara Hanzelmann Streitenberger there was another John Peter and Barbara Streitenberger---perhaps John (Peter) and Barbara Weber Streitenberger? Another possibility is that if John M. was indeed the son of John Peter and Barbara Hanzelmann Streitenberger he apparently came to the United States at some time other than May 31, 1847 with his parents and siblings.
