Notes for John I. Williams: Sharon Herald, Friday Oct 5, 1894 -- "John I. Williams, a puddler employed in the Sharon Iron Works and lining at the corner of Vine and Mill streets, met with a terrible injury on Friday afternoon. He was crossing the switch of the Nypano in the mill yard, between two portions of a freight train, when the train came together, catching him between the bumpers of the cars and crushing him about the lower part of the abdomen in a horrible manner. He was discovered at once and carried later to his home. It was thought that his injuries would prove fatal in a few hours, but later reports are more favorable. He has recovered from the shock attendant on the accident and his physician, Dr. J. W. Reed, has hopes of his ultimate recovery."
Sharon Herald, Friday, Oct 12, 1894 -- "Leg Amputated. The right leg of John Williams, who was so badly crushed by a freight train last week, as noted in these columns was amputated at the thigh joint on Wednesday afternoon by Drs. Griswold, Heilman, Reed, Mitchell, Davis and Tinker, as the only hope of saving his life. There is scarcely a possibility that he will live, however, and he will probably die within a few hours more."
Sharon Herald, Friday, Oct 19, 1894 -- "John Williams, whose probable death we noted last week, from having been crushed by the cars a few days before, and whose leg had been amputated at the thigh joint, died about five o'clock Thursday evening. His funeral was held Saturday afternoon and was largely attended. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Henshaw of the Congregational church and Rev. Merchant, of the M. E. church. He was buried in the uniform of the old-time Atlantic band, and the Occidental and Citizens band, of which he had also been a member, attended his funeral playing dirge ----------- unreadable section -------also attended by the A. A. of I. and S. W. and A. O. F., of both of which he was a member. He was a native of Wales and was in his 39th year, and left a wife and two children, an aged mother and several brothers and sisters. He was also a member of the Woodmen of the World, in which he had $2000 insurance, which his family will receive."
