Thomas Newberry, Gent. was baptized at Yarcombe, County Devon, England November 10, 1594. He evidently obtained an excellent education for his times as he was engaged in legal study in London. As a young man the wave of Puritanism swept over England and it is evident that faith was embraced by Thomas. On March 1630 he and his wife set sail for New England from Plymouth, England on the ship "Mary and John" with a party of colonists from Somerset, Dorset and Devon and founded Dorchester, Mass.
