William Henderson (b. 05 Mar 1747/48, d. 29 Jan 1788)

William moved to Grindal Shoals on Pacolet River in South Carolina prior to 1771; and was a delegate to the second Provinaial Congress, August 1775.On 29 February 1776, he was elected Major of the 6th South Carolina Regiment; and on September 16, 1776, was elevated to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel.Transferred to the 3rd South Carolina Regiment, February 11, 1780, he was taken prisioner at the fall of Charleston, May 12, 1780, being one of the eleven officers to vote against surrender of the city.He was imprisioned in St. Augustine, Florida, and his exchange was effected on June 22, 1781.He was elevated to the rank of Colonel and put in charge of General Thomas Sumpter's brigade; and upon Sumpter's resignation in January 1782, was appointed Brigadier General of State troops, serving until November 21, 1783.He served in the campaign in Georgia in 1778, commanded one flank of the American army at the battle of Stone Ferry, June 20, 1779, and on April 24, 1780, made a desperate sortie with two hundred men during the seige of Charleston.He demonstrated bravery at the Battle of Eutaw Springs, September 8, 1781, being severely wounded while holding his troops in an exposed position under the firece fire of the enemy.He represented the district between the Brod and Saluda Rivers in the Hous of Representatives of the General Assembly which met at Jacksonborough January 8, 1781.After 1784, when he sold his lands on Pacolet Triver to his brother John, he resided at his plantation Prospect Hill in the High Hills of Santee.He was described by General Nathaniel Green as a "most valuable officer"; and following his death on January 29, 1788, he was characterized in a published obituary as "a brave and intrepid officer who was much beloved and respected for his many virtues"
