Notes for T
HOMAS DICKENSON THORPE:
Thomas was born in 1823, and at the time of the census of 1841, at age 18, he resided at 15 Old Road, Dukinfield, County Cheshire, the home of his parents, James and Ann. Ten years later, the census of 1851 reports that he was now "head of the household" and that he worked as a shoemaker. He now had a wife and four children. It is apparent that by now his parents had moved away. However, James and Ann re-appear in the 1861 census as residing in Old Road but no house number is given. In the same year's census, Thomas is listed as an "agent". However, there is no indication as to what sort of agent he was.

The census of 1871 now lists Thomas as an undertaker and a local trade directory for the year 1874 lists T & S Thorpe at 15 Old Road as Coffin and Shroud makers. The census for the years 1881 and 1891 continue to list Thomas as an undertaker therefore we know that he died after 1891.

There is evidence of only two of Thomas's sons having emigrated to the United States. These were George and Thomas. There was also an Aunt Polly who is worth mentioning at this point but we are not exactly sure who she was. The consensus seems to be that Polly is a nickname for Mary and so she is probably the brothers' sister who was born in 1865. See notes on "Aunt Polly" below.

Notes for M
ARIA PRIESTLEY:
It is curious that in every census from 1841 until 1881 (except for 1851), Maria's place of birth is given as Dukinfield, however, for 1851, she gives her place of birth as Sheffield in Yorkshire. Thus, we can not know for certain where she was born.

Although she does not appear in the census of 1891, her husband, Thomas, is not listed as a widower but married. Perhaps she was not at home when the census was taken and that could account for her not being enumerated.

Notes for J
AMES THORPE:
The Empire Census of 1871 lists James as a widower and living with his daughter, Sarah Ann, at #21 Old Road. In 1881, the census shows that James has again married and his new wife is named Hannah. James and Hannah are shown to have one child, John Edward, born about 1873. In 1881, this family is shown to reside at #23 Old Road, Dukinfield.

The record seems to indicate that James' second marriage took place shortly after the census of 1871.
