Notes for WILLIAM WOODWORTH:
1850, 1860 and 1870 Census data indicates the name as William Woodward. In the 1870 Census, William is listed as Woodward and his son John is listed as Woodworth. These are two separate listings, not in the same household.

Reading Death Records list a William Woodward who died April 3, 1886 at the Berks County Almshouse. William's age is listed as 97, he is widowed and died of old age. Place of birth is listed as England and place of burial as Alsace. He was buried April 5, 1886, undertaker C. Henninger.

Note: There is no record of William's burial at Alsace Cemetery.

April 3, 1886 Reading Eagle listed the death of William Woodward, age 97. He resided in Reading where he worked at his trade of blacksmith. He was born in England and "came to this country when a young man." His remains were taken to the home of his son John, 1141 N 9th St from where the funeral will take place.

Alsmhouse records indicate that William was admitted on at least two occassions and possibly three.

A June 15, 1875 entry indicates he was admitted because he had no home, was able bodied and sane. Entry information includes: Age 86, Nativity England, Port Landed N.Y., Time in US 60 years, Place of Settlement Reading, Occupation Blacksmith, could write name, is widowed and the number of times in jail was one.

A May 18, 1882 entry indicates he was admitted because he had no home and because of old age, he was not able bodied and was sane. Entry information includes: Age 93, Nativity England, Port Landed N.Y., Time in US 60 years, Place of Settlement Reading, Occupation Blacksmith, could write name, was widowed and was abstinent.

A third entry appears in a book for 1884 - 1888. The entry is incomplete as are most on the same page. The date of admissions is not provided.

His death is recorded in the Almshouse records with the following information: DOD April 3, 1886, Disease Old Age, Age 97, Number 3061, Where buried Reading, Where from England, Remains taken away by son.
