The Briand/Thurlow/Cole Family Home Page
The Briand side of my family tree has been traced to the 1530's with the help of many wonderful people in Nova Scotia. The Briand's are French Acadian from L'Ardoise, Cape Breton.I have taken the task of locating additional information on the Thurlows from Windsor, Nova Scotia, and the Coles from Monction, New Brunswick. My paternal great grandfather, Ephraim Thurlow, apparently came to Nova Scotia from Manchester, England. We think his name was changed either by himself or by bureaucrats. The story handed down tells us that he stowed away on a ship from England to Canada because he stole a loaf of bread. He married Anne Clark and worked as a grave digger. After his death Anne Clark-Thurlow married a Joe Elliott. My grandfather, Harley Thurlow, was one of 4 or 5 children. He married Celeste Briand from L'Ardoise, Cape Breton. She was apparently working in Windsor as a chamber maid when she meet my grandfather. They soon immigrated to the United States. My maternal great grandfather, Japhet Talbert Cole, was born 8/26/1876 in Moncton, New Brunswick. He married Margaret Keenan, born in County Tryone, Ireland. They immigrated to the United States in 1898.I am trying to find his birth certificate, marriage license to locate names of his parents my gggrandparents. The family story is his father was an English sea captain and his mother Mi'kmaq.I have recently ordered CD #116 & #118 to help in this endeavor. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.I will try and assist anyone I can as well.Thank you, Shay Thurlow | The Briand/Thurlow/Cole Family Home Page Updated September 5, 2000 |
