Tidwells With Meriwether And Coweta County, Georgia Roots

Updated September 5, 2000

I'm looking for information about the father of John Madison TIDWELL born November 13, 1846 in Mississippi, and died August 3, 1918 in Meriwether County, Georgia. He married Frances Elliotte HIGGINS on October 20, 1877. She was the daughter of John HIGGINS and Mary SPENCE.

If anyone researching TIDWELL families in Mississippi or Georgia has information that may support the following tradition in my family, please contact me by e-mail.

According to family tradition the father of John Madison TIDWELL was a sheriff or marshal in Mississippi before the Civil War. His horse returned home with blood on the saddle. It was assumed he was killed by a horse thief.

Family sources say that John Madison's mother, Jenny (INGRAM) TIDWELL and six children moved to Georgia by wagon. A daughter sickened and died of fever on the trip. Jenny and family settled in Meriwether County, Georgia and appear on the 1850 census.

The known siblings of John Madison TIDWELL are:

(01) Martha J. TIDWELL born in MS about 1835.
(02) Louisa A. TIDWELL born in MS about 1836.
(03) Dinah M. TIDWELL born in MS about 1838.
(04) Franklin TIDWELL born in MS about 1842.

During the Civil War Franklin TIDWELL enlisted in the Confederate army. The family lost contact with him; John Madison TIDWELL traded land and hunting dogs for a horse and enlisted in the Confederate cavalry to go to Virginia in order to find his brother. Madison didn't locate his brother, lost his horse and had to walk home from Virginia at the conclusion of the war.

The children of John Madison TIDWELL and Frances HIGGINS are:

(01) Frances Lavonia TIDWELL, b. March 2, 1879.
(02) Carrie Earl TIDWELL, b. January 5, 1882.
(03) Jessie Belle TIDWELL, b. December 28, 1884.
(04) Willie May TIDWELL, b. April 27, 1886.
(05) John Francis (Frank) TIDWELL, b. June 27, 1888.

At family reunions, someone always jokes that our family tree doesn't branch like most trees. Our Tidwell line descends from John Madison Tidwell, an only son; through John Francis (Frank) Tidwell, another only son. Frank Tidwell and Jessie Pearl Mathews added five branches to the family tree with their five sons.
