The 'Tilroe' family name is a rather obscure one, but has been traced back to one Abraham van Tyelroe, circa 1620. This seems to be a residence name referring to the Belgium village of Tielrode (now Tielrode-Temse) in East Flanders (Oost Vlanderen), situated 20 km SW of Antwerp, and is one of the oldest settlements in the Waasland region of Belgium.

We believe that during the Spanish conquest of the Netherlands between 1570 and 1640, protestant residents from this village fled to the island of Walcheren which is now part of the province of Zeeland of the Netherlands. Consequently, the Tilroe name is most dominant in this area.

Various historical spellings of Tilroe include:
Tilro, Tilroo, Tijlroe, Tielro, Tielroo, Tielroe, Tilroij, Tielroy, Tielrooij, Tielrooy, Tilderoe, van Tielroij, van Tielroe, van Tilro, van Tielro,
and others to come as they are uncovered.

The oldest known spelling is "Tigelroda" referring to the village itself. An etymological analysis for the name "Tielrode" can be found at the link "Tielrode: de naam" below, which was not authored by me.

I'm also researching my other ancestors:
- Kotscherofski/Kotschorowski (Vohlynia, Russia; was possibly German 'Enders');
- Gwiazdowski (Poland);
- Schleicher, Schadt (Novi Banovchi, Yugoslavia/former Austian-Hungarian Empire);
- Reijmerink, Harthoorn, Oord (Holland, & Zeeland, Netherlands);
for starters.
