Timperley, Chapman: Early History in Sheffield & Derbyshire

Updated August 23, 2005

I am researching the antecedents of James Timperley, cutler, born c. 1760 in Sheffield (?), England, who married Elizabeth Tingle on 13th June 1781 in Sheffield, England. James had at least two children; James, christened in Sheffield on 13th December 1789, married Elizabeth (last name unknown, born 1789 in Ireland); and John, christened 5th May 1782 in Sheffield, married Mary Youle 26th December 1804.

James may have been descended from James, Robert or Edward Timperley of Tideswell, Derbyshire, England (all of whom we know were living in Tideswell in 1673), and/or from John Timperley, Nailmaker, of Litton, near Tideswell, Derbyshire, who died c. 1693.

Details of each of these links are attached to this report. There is logistical evidence which suggests a link between James, Robert or Edward Timperley of Tideswell with John Timperley of Litton, and a good possibility that Joseph Timperley (christened 25 Feb 1732), of John of Litton's line is the father of James Timperley. I am trying to verify these hypotheses. If anyone else has any information on any of these individuals or their families, I would be grateful if they would contact me; I have more information in all cases.

I am also researching the antecedents of George Chapman, Woodcarver and his wife, Mary Jane Abrahams. Their son, also George Chapman was born 23 Feb 1889 and married Nelley Armstrong on 31 March 1902: all events in Sheffield, England.

I am very interested in hearing from descendents of these individuals and their families, and am happy to share my considerable research on their lines.

Paul Timperley
